You do get a well run and integrated public transport system that is far more effective than anything we have other than that little bit around London.

I agree that you can’t do a macroeconomic or public finance analysis on income tax alone.
Still, I get the feeling that a higher tax regime (which hurts my own wallet) could lead to a wealthy welfare state that benefits all, as I experienced working and living in NL, D and A.

Fair enough. I think that we all know that the US is low tax and NL is high tax.
We could try comparing public services by looking at their roads, with the US having absolutely terrible roads and NL having majestic ones, but then again the size of the country probably has a bit of an impact there as well. It’s always complicated.

When I was there albeit 30+ years ago, the state and interstate roads were adequate in the USA (what more do you want from roads ?).
The city streets in Houston were shockingly bad. I was actually shocked, having believed the USA to be a richer country than the UK which, even after a decade of Thatcherism, didn’t tolerate potholes 2-3 feet in diameter and a foot deep in main city roads. But the city’s roads were paid for out of the city’s income which had never really recovered after the oil crises. I thought of it as a local issue rather than a national, or even a state, one.
Healthcare might be a better indicator of national provision.
