This is a very good article - long, but it gives a clear account of 1948 and tries to propose a way out of the conflict.

And there in lies the rub. There are a lot of them in the USA, and the evangelical zionist lot are a particularly insane bunch. I read somewhere that there are more Evangelical Zionists in the USA than there are Jews in the whole world.
Have they? They blocked 3 attempts by the Russians and Chinese on the UN Security council to condemn Israel only and demand a ceasefire. They supported a general UN statement calling for a ceasefire if both parties support it. They also supported a whole load of other stuff, all on the UN webpage.
Al Jezeera somewhat simplified it all, no surprise there really.

It vanished fairly quickly from the BBC News page this morning but it did originally say that Biden was pushing for a ceasefire.

The US - which is one of Israel’s strongest allies - has once again blocked efforts at the UN Security Council to issue a statement calling on Israel to stop its military offensive, stressing instead its own diplomatic efforts.
There was no effort from Britain at the UN security council. Our rep at the UN essentially said the same as the US rep. It’s worth reading what the French, Chinese and Russian reps also said outside of the security council. They was never any danger of the security council issuing a statement.
