More shit that doesn't merit its own thread (septic tank overflow alert)

Many of you will remember the story of Zac and the money we raised for his treatment in America. He’s back there at the moment and has been given the all clear at the 6 months point. This is particularly good news as it is at this point that 50% relapse. I chatted with his Dad on the Street this morning and he is well chuffed as you can imagine.

There’s got to be more to this than meets the eye. We shouldn’t be having total capacity issues in the summer time, so some grid controller must have dropped the ball pretty badly. I wonder if our reliance on sun and wind is starting to be exposed (they have to shut the turbines down if the windspeed’s too high, and it’s been gloomy and blowing a gale here for a couple of hours now) ?

Depends on the generator as I understand it. With a geared system yes, with a direct link using more sophisticated magnetics you don’t need to.

You may well be right. I suppose everything has a theoretical limit, but maybe not a practical one. I can’t see any kind of glitch here https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/index.php although there is a bit less wind now than there was this morning. The interconnectors are working pretty hard.

Ah, pre Brexit normalisation…

Something, and I know not what, is wrong. External influences or just a creaking system?

There is a general issue here. We come from a background of energy diversity - if we need to travel then we have the options of electric/diesel trains or petrol/electric cars. We used to be able to heat our houses with solid fuel or oil or gas or electricity. Cooking can be by leccy or gas or, of course BBQ.

This is not the future though. The future, for everything, is grid-connected electricity. All the eggs, just one basket. Whenever (not if ever) it goes wrong we’ll be properly fucked.

Except for the BBQ.

In an interview with the BBC, Dowler recalled trying to negotiate with the bear before the attack. “I know this is your territory, I’m just passing through - we don’t have to do this,” he said he told the bear.

Tarantino-esque standoff with a grizzly bear . . .
