Test fit of the cleaned up fireplace today, along with insetting elm mantle into plaster and applying iron paste to the cast.

Iron paste on, the detail areas are where i wasn’t them. Couple more coats on the flat polished areas and job done. Then its onto fixing the tiles, more to that than i first thought, but I’ll give it a go.
Another couple of light coats, that’s a much as I’ll do this side of fitting it. Pic of the Elm mantle in place, softens it down as i think the original cast iron shelf is a bit too harsh for my liking.
I fucking hate builders… why they give builders a straight edge and square fuck knows, they certainly didn’t use them on this alcove. 9 shelves, maple battons, some of which are now curved enough to string and shoot fucking arrows!
27 holes drilled, perfectly level, side battons to do next, another 34 holes required.
Then I’ll have to scribe the shelves in! Once that’s done, it’ll all be coming out again for the decorating, fucking joy!
Fireplace is finally trial fitted, and it fits. Black and tan terracotta tiles to lay for the hearth and then the decorative tiles and mantle to fit.
Bit like British Rail… getting there!
