That feeling when you realize you’re giving out likes to five year old posts . . .
All the time mate. I’d like older posts, too, but the forum keeps getting deleted…
This thread’s a classic - ask two simple questions about mattresses - so far every response is unrelated, mostly about sandwiches: how can you not like that?
Pleased that John Lewis saw the light over the lunacy of a £15k mattress and have now upped the ante to £20k
“Never Knowingly Sold” I should imagine…
We bought one of these… https://www.hypnosbeds.com/uk
Hugely comfortable and great value.
Dreamworks make the mattresses for Loaf.
One of those was the very first thing we bought together when we moved into our first house. 6ft wide. 1986. It’s still our bed, although the mattresses aren’t the originals.
given like me you happily used a bed that came with the house (many would not) can I suggest you look for relyon/ myers/ vi spring/john lewis / harrison spinks etc as a second hand buy - we got one practically new at very sensible money and you get to try before you buy - oddly second hand nearly new beds dont sell easily
re the heavy - yep - get a manservant or hifi chums to help you turn it - we dont bother turning anywhere near as much as they recommend, defo a two person job:)
more springs is defo better but well made in UK - there are a few makes out there, all following the same recipe and pretty damn good
a really nice pocket sprung bed and clean sheets every day is my idea of heaven
also junk the base - it will be shit and the sprung bases are much better, come with a second hand bed, and you dont have to faff about on made to measure pricing for special sizes (or gaps)
Is it that odd? I certainly wouldn’t consider one.
Bought our mattress when we moved in in 2004. Should probably think about replacing it, but it’s so comfy. It was nearly £2k back then, so gawd knows how much now.
Yet most of us have slept in hotels (and some even at Lopwell !).
I don’t think it’s odd when you’re presented with the choice of a new one.
There’s a difference between ‘would prefer’ and ‘wouldn’t consider’ though. On the other hand it is true that new beds aren’t so expensive that there’s a really strong case for buying second-hand.
True but I would also not consider it if I was buying for long term use.
Hotel beds are a necessity, you’re not going to drag the filthy, cum stained thing home though
If it mattered significantly then we could pretty easily take a plastic mattress cover to a hotel. Do many people do that (I confess I never have) ? I expect clean linen and the mattress to be bug-free and unsmelly and beyond that I don’t care much.
We got rid of a double bed (timber frame, slatted base) to a charity shop a few years ago. It had only ever been a guest bed here and, as far as I can recall, had been slept in for perhaps a few tens of nights over a couple of decades, and never by ‘leaky’ small children. We asked if they wanted the mattress. “Is it spotless ?” they asked. “I think so” I said. It looked fine to me but when they got it out into the bright sunshine they noticed a mark, smaller than an egg, right in one corner. I can’t easily imagine how it got there - maybe a spill from a teacup ? But they refused it on that basis. If I was buying from a seller who was that picky I think I’d consider second-hand. If it was filthy and stained with cum and/or excrement then that would be different. I’m the same about second-hand hi-fi.
We had a few days holiday in Bruges once - here http://www.bb-nuitblanche.com/content/lune-de-miel. They make a thing of the fact that the bed was the one that the Belgian King Albert and Queen Paola spent their honeymoon in.
