So I’ve bought a new telly (Hisense U7N) which is a Mini LED set, and I’m happy with everything about it apart from the motion handling, which is doing my head in. It’s so much better in almost every respect than my 15 year old Sony LED set, but the motion handling artefacts are doing my head in. The old Sony is so much better in this respect.
My question is, for those of you with experience, should I just bite the bullet and go OLED?
I got a great deal on the Hisense, OLED would cost substantially more.
Worth note, I went for the Hisense as it has Freely on board, so I thought I could maybe cancel my Sky sub & save some cash into the bargain…Not gonna happen. Freely is shite…no option to pause/rewind/fast forward broadcast telly, or any option to schedule choices in the guide…so, just like old school telly, almost to the point of pre VHS!
tl:dr Is motion handling on OLED telly’s better than MiniLED?
Go to richer sounds and use the viewing rooms to watch some sets. Using the source you normally do.
Oled is off the scale better but it’s the modern processors that will deal with motion blur. I’d suggest a “last year” model LG or similar. Even an open box. If you identify the model you want email the RS clearance box and ask for a deal.
They often send you prices well under the sale ones as every store is contacted and some want the stock gone.
Sadly the only OLED telly’s I can find that have freely (long term cost cutting option) are Panasonic, which as far as I know RS don’t stock?
If you do find a Panasonic model you like, I’d recommend trying the official Panasonic Outlet on eBay, usually some great deals:
I’ve had my Panasonic OLED 6-years now and it’s been overall pretty great, not seen a MiniLED tv to compare though.
The brand filter doesn’t work for that link but they do stock them. Never buy at the listed price or sale price - always ask via the clearance section query email.
Open box are way cheaper.
I’ve just done a search and RS do stock Panny!
I’ll get my me coat!
Have you tried changing the motion smoothing settings or turning it off altogether?
Do these new TVs pretty much all have the ability to record Freeview broadcasts?
I bought an LG G4 a few weeks ago in the RS Sale. It replaces an LG C4 that I’ve had for 6 years and is now being enjoyed by a family member.
This.
Turn motion smoothing off.
Yep. Spent the last 2 days effin’ about with settings using Google results as a guide… (AV forums etc.)… It has got better, just think I’m probably hyper sensitive to motion shit 'cos my old Sony was so good in this regard. Tbh I don’t really have the cash atm for OLED, but I watch a fuckton of telly so if it’s gonna be better then as its a long term investment I’ll find the wonga from somewhere!.. Anybody need a slightly misused kidney/liver/cornea?
OLED definitely has the superior picture but I’m not sure if it’s superior wrt motion. I think that more down to the image processing software which will be different brand to brand rather than inherent technology. As suggested further up a trip to richer to have a look at various sets playing the same content should give you a better idea of which one you like best.
Edit
Google AI tells me..
OLED Advantages:
- Faster Response Times:
OLED pixels react almost instantaneously, minimizing motion blur and ghosting.
It will still differ between manufactures though so I would still try to do a like for like comparison.
I’m surprised it can’t be resolved with a setting.
What artefacts are you struggling with (e.g. ‘soap opera effect’, microstutter, ghosting on sport etc) and on all sources or just SD etc. More info needed.
If you do just want to lob a wad of cash at it, I went from a 2012 Panasonic plasma regarded as having just about the best motion handling in the business to the LG G4 (OLED) and have seen no degradation in motion handling.
Honestly have no idea what particular thing the issues I’m having would be called, but it’s like slow motion ghosting following everything that moves on screen… People walking across the screen are being “followed” by their image, but it has got much better over the last day after changing settings. I’ve got it set in filmmaker mode now with all the clever motion settings set to off. Does now seem much better with movies & high def. stuff, but most on air broadcasts, even the HD feeds, are bugging me?
I’d screenshot the settings, but right now I’m cooking & can’t find the fuckin’ remote!
Do appreciate all the helpful suggestions…
