Such a loss, even when he was torturing our batsmen you couldn’t help but admire his skill and desire to win.

You can argue about opening and middle order batsmen, captains, wicket keepers, pace/seam bowlers and the like.

But choose an all time World XI and leave Warney out - you’ve just picked the wrong team.

He was that good.

Agreed. In an all time XI you’re probably picking one spinner and he’s it.

I love how much you can read into Gatting’s reaction. He obviously thought that he couldn’t be out, it was some kind of voodoo. Astonishing. Warne was, simply, the best ever - from his first ball bowled in England (and possibly before that, but I’d never heard of him then!)

Oh that is a shock, hard to believe. No age. A truly great sportsman RIP

Yeah, I had been living here for quite a few years but had heard of this wizard in a Baggy Green.
That '93 The Ashes series just showed that the hype was true.
First ball bowled and he exploded onto the scene.
Fantastic cricketer.

I have nothing more to add.

I wonder whether the news of Rodney Marsh’s death (Warne did tweet about it) played any part in what he did the rest of the evening. It’s very sad anyway but would be even more so if that news exacerbated some latent condition.

He did have alcohol and drug issues. I have to admit having the same thoughts.

Didn’t realise he died in Thailand.

Never mind the ball of the century, I remember watching this “live” and it showed his amazing cricketing brain*

*as well as the execution of his theory, of course.

Told his manager he needed a year off. Manager agreed to 3 months. Over worked, stressed, booze, drugs.

A deadly combo.

What’s your source for that Jim?

I’ve not read anything that suggested booze or drugs were involved?

One of my best mates used to have his own radio show, he was the Saturday sports guy on a talk radio station. He’s friends with a lot of top cricketers, I’ve met a few through him, and that’s long been the concern about “Shaney’s partying” .

William Hurt - shame I always enjoyed him as an actor.

Will need to dig out Smoke for a watch again - great wee film.
