That’s sad. Dance The Night Away is one of the great singles, an uplifting monster. That goes on at a party- fills the floor guaranteed. RIP.
A canny innings, used to love watching him when I was a kid.
Tbh, I thought he’d died years ago…
Me too
My Scottish grandad use to love watching him in the 70s
Ha, it was with my half-Scottish Grandad that I used to watch him. He was born in Hartlepool but his Dad was from Greenock.
Didn’t realise he had directed so many cracking films.
Love the Princess bride and a a Few Good Men.
No, indeed. That is a 10 year CV of absolute bangers.
And they’re all so different.
The sign of an auteur
Loved ‘Stand by me’ in particular - work of genius, rare movie that’s better than the book .
Sad news. This Is Spinal Tap is one of my favourite films, and I have a real soft spot in my heart for Stand By Me (Chomper! Sick balls!!
)
But he’ll always be Meathead to me . . .
Unlike most US TV of the time I don’t think that made it over here.
American version of ‘Till Death Us Do Part.
It’s funny reading modern internet posters who don’t realize the show was laughing at the lead character Archie Bunker and not with him. The actor Carroll O’Conner who portrayed him in fact held extremely progressive views and was a tireless advocate for the abolition of the death penalty
Same here with Til death us do part. We had Farage ranting at the BBC just a week or two back demanding that they apologise for inflicting Alf Garnett on us. Two things. Farage probably shared/shares Garnett’s prejudices and the point of the comedy was to show how nonsensical (& offensive) such opinions were even then back in the 60’s & 70’s.
It certainly did, I remember seeing it sometime in the 70s. It was a toned down US version of Till Death Us Do Part and never really caught on
