So odd… At the end of our camping holiday last week, I was first up, waiting for the others. They were all in varying states of consciousness, within the little zipped up mozzy net bedrooms that are in modern tents. It reminded me of Springwatch, like chicks in nesting boxes. I idly looked at my phone and switched the camera around to check the state of things. The hairy conker coloured thing looking back at me was a bit scary! I thought, fuck me, in 2 weeks of generally going feral, I have actually become Bill Oddy! I then thought, not heard about him for a while, is he dead?

A proper birder and a regular visitor to Shetland and, in particular, Fair isle.
Packham’s right when he says he really knew his stuff, the account of him and Andy Lowe staking out a nondescript Bunting (on Fair Isle) all day and coming to the conclusion that it was a Pallas’s Reed Bunting is legendary. It was later trapped and confirmed as such - the first record for Britain.
CP’s obit says it better than I ever could…

Yeah I was surprised at his age. My Dad knew him fairly well, always doing charity stuff at the local Catholic Church Community Hall in Rochdale and I think working until very recently.
