100% ^ this ^

And we just let any old shit in? Do the Germans have problems with this junk? Other than odd dodgy shop, does this all go through Amazon/eBay?

It is illegal to place electronics with fake CE marks on the market in the EU, because they haven’t been tested to safety standards.

But don’t worry - after Brexit it will be perfectly fine to sell them in the UK!

Correct. There is next to no enforcement of CE standards in a lot of areas - it’s potentially based on self-assessment, though (if done at-all) electronics are normally assessed by specialist companies, an expensive and sometimes slow process. Trading standards should enforce, but they are hopelessly underfunded and undermanned; equally there is a strong disincentive because you can be sued privately for any faults, damage, harm etc. The reality is lots, and lots of Chinese garbage is sold by unaccountable individuals, either with fake labels, or no labels. Only the bigger names do things properly, simply because they can’t run and hide.

PS: the “China Export” label isn’t actually illegal, just misleading…
