We are all totally addicted to dal here these days. Cheaper than chips and absolutely delicious. I’ve taken to doing double so there are leftovers for breakfast of lunch the next day. This is what was left over from lunchtime

We ate it with the leftovers of last night’s Goan fish curry and beans!

Same here. I used 500g of dry moong so we have another meal’s worth of leftovers: lunch tomorrow.

My colleague tells mean Makhani means butter.

its true - so does mine

Dal Makhani or Dal Makhni (pronounced daal makh-nee , ā€œbuttery lentilsā€) is a dish originating from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The primary ingredients are whole black lentil ( urad ), red kidney beans ( rajma ), butter and cream. The dish gets its richness from the use of cream or butter, but it can also be prepared with yogurt, milk or no dairy.

Have you read this? I’m enjoying it :stuck_out_tongue: The reason your post made me think about it is that in the chapter on dal he says that dal makhani should be a restaurant thing, not home dal :stuck_out_tongue:

It certainly paints a different picture of food in India than I had in my head (I know you’ve actually lived there though!!), although I gather it’s often an exaggerated position he’s taking. Quite readable though.

I haven’t done the charcoal in ghee thing but added smoked paprika to my dal makhani because I read it was a reasonable substitute

Where is everyone getting their dal these days? Our local Asian grocer has shut for lock down and I’m stuck with just the supermarkets. Online I’m not sure of prices…

Pah, what kind of faff blocking obscenity is that? Reasonable, like adequate is not good enough.

More ingredients, more processes, more mess equals serene faff satisfaction.

I keep meaning to try the Dishoom recipe from their book…but it’s super faffy. Dal faff.
