I’d be more worried about carbon monoxide, we don’t have an extractor fan!
I went to our local shop when lockdown and got the few ~2kg bags that were left at the time.
Online prices are quite high. I’ve been alternating e.g. toor or chana dal with red lentils that we get from Tescos to eek out my stocks. You can make a good tasty dal just with red lentils.
I did buy these silly expensive kidney beans from amazon, because I read that jammu kidney beans from north India are the best (see @crimsondonkey , I am not neglecting the faff) . I now have enough kidney beans to cook once a week until the end of the year
Plus, making paneer makes my dal stocks go further as well.
I would like to get more moong dal and also whole Urad Dal. I have enough toor dal to last for a while, still on the first of two big bags.
sort of - i visited about 50 odd times, longest stays were for month (sometimes I had an short lease apartment, sometimes hotel) - some years I visited 4 times a year. I never quite say I lived there, but i did get to know the place very well, and did eat home cooking made by colleagues. Some cooked a simple thinner dal, others cooked Dal Makhani.
One trip was an AM flight to Mumbai, have a meeting returning the same day!!!
we ordered some of both online last night. We have a couple of S Asian supermarkets locally but the quality is very variable - we have had some very stale lentils. Once got some no brand Jeera, that was full of grit…
where did you order from?
I’ve also bought stale dal in the past, but there’s a good shop locally that I think has sufficient throughput that everything is relatively fresh.
we normally use https://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk/ but under the current lockdown access to their shop is variable. Needed to order spices about 10 days ago, and their online shop wasn’t functioning. So we tried: https://spicesontheweb.co.uk/ - the spices arrived quite quickly and were fresh. But they dont doo dal etc. The Asian Cookshop was working last night, so we ordered Dal, Pickles and some other chinese stuff.
But despite having two chances to order spices in the last two weeks - I still forgot to order Jeera.
That’s where I’ve used for my last few orders- spices are really good and also seem relatively cheap
i also like it they sell smaller quantities - like 50g of beetroot powder (even that is too much but better than 100g or more)
I’ll take a look there. I was looking at https://www.spicesofindia.co.uk but didn’t get round to placing an order. I ordered nice ghee from amazon of all places
It is smokey but takes it to another level.
Smoked paprika is not really an alternative. It is nice butdoesn’t recreate the effect. It is fairly simple to do and the pot can be left outside. In fact the mum that showed me how to make it did most of her prep and cooking outside.
The back yards of Killinghall and Manningham were always full of women grinding spices, making breads and soaking and cooking daal.
A lot of restaurants in Bradford were supplied by home cooks.
