Red wine advice please

I’m going to be significantly changing my drinking habits and have been away from the red wine scene for a good few years, so looking for advice please.

I’m looking for a smooth, fruity red, not too tannic or dry at a reasonable price (<£10 say).

Any recommendations?

Thanks chaps.

We drink a bit of Pinot Noir, Cotes du Rhône and Cotes du Village all of which is freely available from the likes of Tesco for well under £10, particularly when the do 25% off for six bottles. Virgin Wine is quite good too although better for mahoosive Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon from Straya.

I’ll pm you with labels when I get home as I can’t remember any of the run of the mill £6 bottles we drink over a couple of nights in the middle of the week.

Don’t really like the stuff. The only red wine I ever liked was this:

More like port.

And if I’m feeling flush this is a real cracker, especially when on offer:

Get ye self down to Aldi or Lidl. Choose a “new World” wine under £10, sit back and enjoy.
Once you discover a style that you like, Google is your friend, and investigate more interesting versions from other wineries.
You really have to be a complete numpty to buy bad wine these days.

Having said all that, Portuguese wine can be great value.

19 Crimes Uprising, Yellow Tail, Jam Shed are pretty reliable choices from the supermarkets.

I like Margaux stuff if I’m feeling rich, which isn’t very often……

Jam Shed for sure! It is even possible to get a free glass (whilst stocks last) at some supermarkets ! :sunglasses: :wine_glass:

The Guv’nor from Majestic. Fresh from the bottle it’s good. Let it breathe for 24 hours and it transforms into something very, very good.

This is a very drinkable and smooth rich Shiraz, quite often on offer at £8ish.

Anything by Christian Patat that you can find for less than a tenner, buy as many as you can!

Also for under a tenner you can find some nice primitivo and this frequently gets discounted into your range too -

(Yes I do like bold Italian reds!)

Also if you shop at Tesco look out for when they have their 25% 6 bottles or more deals, maybe once a month but only for a day or two - I tend to stock up when this comes around.

Given your rehab, just keep an eye on alcohol levels between wines which in red typically range between 12-14.5%, and total consumption level. I recommend buying smaller glasses!

Thanks everyone. Really appreciated.

@crimsondonkey Wayne, the plan is to totally ditch beer drinking and go with half a bottle of red on Tuesday and Saturday evenings, which tend to be my dedicated music listening evenings.
