Hi Charlie.
Gib
I’ve zero interest in R2R really, but, Out of the Blue, err, all-time top, err, 2?
Golly, that’s really quite something.
When you listen to the production masters, the difference in recording quality from the studios and the artists becomes very apparent. Out of the 4 in this picture, the Kate Bush is head and shoulders above the rest. Out of the Blue is pretty good. Piano Man sounds a bit veiled, but that’s true of all of Billy Joel’s albums.
The tape for Out of the Blue sounds much better than my first pressing LP - lots of details, which I have never heard from my LP, but more importantly real presence in the music.
I kind of figured that the Kate Bush would be top-notch, but I have a significant personal attachment to the ELO album.
Billy Joel, not so much
R2R is indeed a lot of faff and you need bottomless pockets - not much hiss from 15 IPS tape though.
The faff is something you get used to, if you want to get the best out of R2R - every time I play a tape, the machine is cleaned and the machine calibrated to the line up test tones on the head of the tape - every time you record, you have to check the bias and record freq response with a set of test tones as batches of tape can differ very slightly. Record onto 15 IPS tape with Dolby SR and you can get 90-95 dB SNR - hiss becomes a thing of the past.
That’s a brave man playing AEG DIN pancakes on platters with an upright Studer A807 - in fact that’s totally insane. Pancakes are designed to be played on platters with a horizontal or slightly tilted R2R. If the tape wanders off the flangeless platter, the tape becomes an expensive bowl of brown tagliatelle.
Was browsing ETSY for a present and noticed these - don’t know if they’d be any use to the tape heads ?
Production run of only 10 Metaxas Studio machines - probably all pre-sold - but why would anyone buy this, when you would have concerns about parts supply and serviceability in 10 years time?
PS this is assuming that you have fabulously deep pockets
Indeed, if the pockets were that deep I’d be buying an old Studer.
Watch this one with amusement as to the final value achieved…
£10 ?
Err its at $1225, 13 bidders with 3 days to go…
But yeah £10 is the highest I’d prolly go.
Completely nuts.
NO copy of ANY music in ANY format is worth that.
madness, I tell ya, madness !
I really wish you hadn’t linked to that, because eBay decided to show me this:
Ends at 02:41 tomorrow morning. Might chuck $100 at it before I go to bed …
At this point it’s not about actual worth but more likely future value as an investment.
Yep nuts I agree.
