Reel 2 Reel - bottomless pit of faff, expense and hisssssssss

I assume they’re talking about DCC?

A friend had a deck (and was sufficiently neuro-divergent as to a) have the patience b) feel compelled to type* in all the track names on the front panel so they could scroll past on a crappy LED display).

* move a caret around an alphabetical display using arrow keys and hit enter for each letter - it was extremely painful waiting for him to finish before we went out for a pint or whatever but he wouldn’t go out until it was done

This is too early for DCC; that came out in ‘92 and was a Philips ‘innovation.’

EDIT- is this a really early DAT prototype?

DAT used video recorder head technology…a spinning drum containing the heads. The tape was helically scanned. Also …obvs the audio was converted to digital data. Judith shows that the device she was demonstrating had static heads.

Luckily they had no idea that streaming was in their future!

Looks like an early S-DAT, so a different system to R-DAT which eventually just became DAT (as per this of course).

They did manage to only have one version of a format before launching which is quite an achievement by recent standards.

Having enjoyed some of my tapes all over again I’m seriously considering one of these with the tape head EQ mod -

For new there is a quite a long waiting list 2 years ish

Yep suspected as much. Better stop dithering and make up my mind then.

I like the Decware flea power amplifiers too but suspect they’d have to just go on the horn and use something else for the bass drivers.

I’m using my 2A3 3 watter on my bass - It’s worth a try

What kind of bass driver?

Faital pro 15" inch unsure of exact model

Snap (on the Franken-horns).

My Sony SIT amps are great for the horn but have zero control over the Faital 15” drivers. My suspicion is that the 2.3w Decwares will be similar.

Steve Deckert just got back to me:

Good news = the EQ can be adjusted on each channel all the way from NAB to EQ without need for a switch.

Bad news = build time is currently 30-36 months

What’s Pete’s lead time?

Great question.
