I think the record is supported by the vacuum created between the inner and outer rings.
Does it change the height at which the top of the record will sit relative to the arm pivot?
The vacuum sucks the record height down by around 3-4mm compared to the record just resting on the mat. So I set the arm height with the vacuum holding the record down.
I saw those for sale the other day, quite fancied the ceramic one. Have you formed any thoughts on it yet?
I spent a few hours with the vacuum mat today but I’ve only played one side with the ceramic mat. First impressions are very favourable. Both mats sound really good. I imagine that I’ll need to spend a bit of time with them to form a reliable preference.
I’ll watch this space
Apparently it sucked.
Wondering whether these mats, particularly the vacuum one evolved out of the AT funded program developing that Seiko Epson TT in the turntable design thread.
My last one was so bright that it made every record look like torville and Dean had skated on it.
this isn’t bad as actually, it has two brightness settings i found out accidentally ![]()

Is it an ikea one?
Despite being full up I was offered some Royd Apexes at a decent price. An old fav of mine as they work brilliantly in big and small rooms so needed to revisit. 3d
Courtesy of Wayne I swopped the Project for the Puresound. It’s 4 times bigger so it must sound 4 times better?
Plus these little chaps for moving coil boostage.
I have a 3mv mm cartridge. Is there a simple way to double the output before it hits the mm phono stage on my pre?
Something like a pair of Sowter 1090s could work (not something I have ever tried though).
