Very rare the Shirley Labs stuff was rather expensive in it’s day (Parmeko trans etc) 96 gns. In 1966 was the higher end of audio particularly for what is a pair of Mullard 5/10’s with a bunch of additional functionality. This one will need a trailer load of work but there is so little info out there about Shirley Labs stuff (Bloke who ran it was a musician of note and a hifi reviewer) I thought I’d dump this here. It will not be staying
Still to pick up so I don’t actually have them yet but won on eBay. Final piece of my speaker puzzle, though I need to finish and figure out mounting them:
Ahem…some very cheap Chinese drivers modified by David Pinnegar to add a copper pole piece and an extended inner cone (extra bit of paper). They are supposed to be Lowtheresque and are 8" which these horns are made for.
These horns are also being sold cheap as they are not his best work and I will need to finish them but I’m feeling pretty happy that it’s coming together.
The crossovers have been the expensive part really and I’m back to my original two-way plan (go easy lol) .
So yes, not active and only two-way - must try harder.
Talking of foo and without wishing to antagonise JB, I eventually got round to plugging a Musicworks Revive power cable into my DAC a few days ago. I purchased it
at a bargain price from Monya on the Wam. It replaced a run of Furutech fptcs 21 with very similar connectors. It’s a different league. Much better separation of instruments. Vocals have a lot more emotion. Very happy.
I have to admit the price was very appealing to try something similar to going the Lowther route. If in the future I fancy a change then the modular design of the speakers will allow easy swapping to a compression driver and horn, so I always have that in the back of my mind.
I also still have some YL tweeters I bought that could be used for a three-way system attempt.
I can’t see me changing the lower frequencies as the boxes are already huge even though they don’t match the stupidity scale of tapped horns.
I will get the plaster horns around March next year and see what’s what.
