SJS Resurrected

Does it make any sense to have two stepped volume controls, one coarse and one fine? Has this ever been done?

Doesn’t one of the Bottlehead diy preamps have such an arrangement?

I couldn’t name one…and I’m happy that way

How did they compare then?

I take it that wasn;t directed at me

Sorry, that was to the OP.

Most obviously

They all adequately attenuate the input sine wave over a suitable range of input voltages, so indeed they all meet the technical spec. However most of them only play sine waves adequately rather than music

Make.sense? No. Has it been done? yes.

Is the first one a Cheshire pot?

can’t be, no clusters of faux diamond chippings stuck to it

Don’t they go on the end of the knob?

Glass-ware do a few variations on that theme.

Have you also tried http://www.hificollective.co.uk/stepped_attenuators/glasshouse-ladder-stepped-stereo-charcroft-seiden.html?

Haha…NO

I find stepped attenuators really frustrating, never the volume I actually want
And contraversially I don’t like those resistors, very high clarity granted but I find them tonally lacking and joyless. I appear to be in a minority of one on this view, but hey…

Following on from the successful launch of the Model 3 riaa, and the Model 5 power amp, SJS Electroacoustics are pleased to present the new Model 7 line stage pre-amplifier.

The Model 7 has been designed as the 20th Anniversary re-imagination of the original Arcadia Model 1 line stage preamplifier, which was first delivered to customers in early 1997.

The Arcadia Model 7 line stage is based upon the same 6111wa NOS military valve and has been specifically engineered for sonic performance rather than technical specification, and fulfils all SJS Electroacoustics primary design criteria:

  • Single Ended circuit topology
  • Pure Class A operation
  • Zero negative feedback
  • Valve rectification and choke-input HT power supply
  • Custom made HT T-network power supply capacitors with silver leads
  • Point-to-point circuit wiring without PCBs
  • Hand built
  • PTFE board for component mounting
  • High quality components throughout
  • Custom made aluminium chassis

Bespoke customisation of the internal components is possible to meet our clients’ specific requirements, whether it is replacement of the Audyn capacitors with Dueland RS or CAST or possibly even using Tantalum film resistors, for example, these can be discussed at the point of ordering.

Each amplifier comes with 2 years parts a labour warranty, except for the valves which have a 6 month warranty.

I am currently using one of these in Maple with black top but I have moved house very recently without telling Simon.
