Aye…I was shown how to put them on by a Well Known Climber who worked at Outside in Llanberis - it involved thrusting the toe in as hard as possible, then twisting the shoe over the heel. The idea was that the strange bend focussed the weight allowing extremely small things to become footholds.
Luckily, climbing fashion now dictates that shoes don’t have to be excruciatingly painful anymore… I’ve been known to wear a sock (and on 1 or 2 occasions the sock went over the shoe to aid wet weather grip.
As for showy macho types who climb, they’re usually at the indoor wall. Traditional (outdoor) climbers tend to stand about in pubs in their shapeless cagoules hoping no one can smell the yellow streak they left in their pants after the epic muddy chimney they just stupidly thrutched up.

They’ll get stretched out of shape by your (bulbous) ankles. I would return them for a refund if I were in your shoes…

my left one is in a terrible shape ATM. Othopod suggests it might need to be replaced, but I’m too young as they dont last very long

True and the screws on my amplifier lid don’t align either but that kind of thing doesn’t mess with my brain so I’m okay with it
