Snell Type A

I’m considering listing my speakers for sale… :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
Just wanted to gauge interest before I take photos etc. I believe they are Type I variant, all working no issues, cone surrounds all good. The only down is the speaker cloth which is a little tatty in a few small spots, although I believe the ones I have are replacements of the originals anyway. Driven by the right amp you will spend a lot of money to beat them.

Would be putting them up for £1100

seems like a very low price to me, I’d be advertising them at £2k

There’s a set of A/iii on eBay for £3300 at the moment which is a bit keen. Fuck all seems to be selling at the moment but I’d be happy to pay £1500 for A/ii (if I had the money (and the space))

Yes!

I think its what I paid for them and they owe me nothing after what must be nearly 14-15years. Those III’s are an insane price I think £1800-2000 is III money. I could probably put them up for £1500, but I prefer to just get stuff sold when I don’t want it anymore

I remember them from Scalford Dom. I haven’t been keeping an eye on prices but £1100 seems very fair given how good they sounded. My Ks came back last week from long-term loan to a friend and I’m trying to find time and space to get them set up again. Sadly I don’t have the space for any As.

£1,100 seems bargain-territory. If I didn’t have the Singing Washing Machines I’d have your arm off.

£1100 in 2009 is worth around £1700 now, don’t forget inflation.

Bargain @dom

If my BiL had pulled his fucking finger out with his house move then he’d be all over these.

Pretty certain a friend would jump on these if you choose to sell - what are the ideal amp requirements?

Pass Labs Aleph 2

Best I heard them with was Guy’s Audio Third (or whatever he calls them ) prototype mono blocks.
Otherwise I think Dom used a beefy Modwright integrated with good results.

Years ago, I spent an afternoon with Dom trying various tube amps (including mine) but the Snell’s seemed to like a bit of power!

Ooh I’ve also got some second audio monos, 15 watt PP 2a3. Expect they would sound good with A’s.

You may as well have a Naim amp for any similarity between the Second Audios and Guys amps, they are totally different.

I doubt the Second Audios would be any good with the As at all
In fact I know they wouldn’t be as we tried better and more powerful tube amps (including Puresound 845 monos) with the As with OK but not great results

I had some massive valve amps at one point with some weird Russian valves with pointy bits on the top. Can’t remember the brand, but the lights dimmed when I turned them on. They sounded very good, but otherwise I have used mostly class A transistor stuff.

But yeah guys prototype valve thing they were the best I have heard them sound

A/ii actually did seem to take more driving than A/iii. I’d say 30W minimum with A/ii and I think the impedance dips a bit in places.

6C33Cs ?

Einstein made a substantial OTL amp using them

GU29/FU29 think they are around 50W max PP?

I had a pair of Aii for over 10 years, and most of the time it was with my PSE 2A3 power amp, but the PSE 300B version did also sound great with them. I didnt have them in a huge room, and didnt listen super loud, so maybe that helped me get away with lower power.

Not sure why that weird comment as I wasn’t comparing them

The A/ii is 86dB and around 4ohms so no reason why the parallel PP 2a3 wouldn’t drive them ok.

Used them with Snell J & K which are much more sensitive but the bass control on the seconds is very impressive.

Found it, 6C33 in a balanced audio technology vk60
