Stream or records is the way.
It’s more about choosing. I find it so hard to pick music by staring at a screen. I miss reading along spines and being grabbed by a cover / font / colour that makes me think of the album
I have quite a few CDs and a lot of downloads that aren’t on the streaming services, so the NAS still gets used.
I don’t stream or download, but routinely put cds on a hard drive attached to a Squeezebox Touch. Pass on cds to pals for reasons of space. Did not own cd player for years, but have recently bought a late 80s Denon. Prefer records.
Since I retired and stopped travelling I have drifted back to LPs and CDs away from file based music.
The main impetus for this is how rubbish all the file playing software is/has been at correctly finding and playing classical music, which is 75% of my listening.
The new Apple classical app is a big improvement but I have pretty well gone back to getting an LP or CD out of the rack and sticking it on.
I bought the CD transport I use in 1995 or so.
Tagging for classical is generally woeful.
I haven’t found any system that works and have no intention of doing anything Apple
To be honest I don’t have a huge classical collection so it has not been a massive issue for me.
My bugbear is that The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Miles Davis Quartet are under ‘T’
Not on Apple Music they’re not.![]()
I’m all vinyl and CD now.
I tend to buy 2nd hand CD’s if I can as they are vastly cheaper than the various quality incredibly expensive vinyl available, unless I REALLY want the LP.
I’ve had a few goes at streaming and it’s just not for me, I can’t help but skip tracks and search whilst not really listening to any of it.
As for ripping CD’s, as a family man I simply don’t have the time or inclination to be honest.
I hear cassettes are good? ![]()
In Autumn / Winter - 85% Vinyl, 10% CD, 5% streaming ish
In Spring / Summer - 50% Vinyl, 40% streaming, 10% CD ish.
No rips, life’s too short.
Still wouldn’t be without CD though.
100% streaming from Qobuz now. The turntable will more than likely just stay in the garage.
I think I’m 95% streaming these days (Spotify), and 4% CD on the occasion I have an actual sit down and just listen. I think I’ve played 2LPs since the baby was born last Summer.
I’m purely CD, as my turntable has a hum like a pylon. Must get round to trying to fix it (2 yrs and counting).

Since upgrading my vinyl setup last year I listen to way more vinyl than streaming/CDs.
Thankfully I’m not seasonally variable… Streaming (from NAS or RP) when I’m dicking about the house, CD when I’m sitting down listening ('cos my new cd player sounds better than WiiM… Just!) & vinyl when I can be arsed & fancy tactile interaction! (rarely these days… LP12 owner!
)
When the sun’s out, I’m usually out with it and my TT’s not that portable is all.
All this streaming talk makes me want to get a nas as I’m bored waiting for my old laptop to boot up
Couple of questions
Would this do?
And is it easy to install my music from laptop and redirect to the squeezebox?
Another advantage of not streaming or listening to digital broadcasting or radio is that I have no idea what Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran etc. et al. sound like.
Since moving house I’ve listened to Spotify much less than I did previously.
The reality of just how much music I actually owned dawned on me when I nearly had a hernia moving and unboxing all the albums and CD’s at this end.
Add in a couple of amazing tweaks to the vinyl set up and this is me right now (minus my usual glass of wine obviously)
