SOYS: State Of Your System

Some may recall that I recently upgraded to a Rega P9, you may not have realized that this was the late great Colins (dudywoxer) turntable.

It’ll be well looked after old friend and enjoyed everyday.

Nice one Rob,
I sold Colin a pair of speakers many years ago and we always looked out for each other for a chat at Scalford. He loved his Rega gear, Good to see the TT go where it is appreciated.

Really good to hear it’s gone to such a good home. Lovely deck. And a lovely bloke. Still hard to believe he’s gone.

Well the SPL pre-headphone-amp whizzkit is gone (I miss its cute meters…), part-exchanged for a barely-used AudioValve Eclipse part-tubed pre, made in Germany, with some pretty Marmitey looks (which I’ve grown to like), and bomb-proof build.

When the right one finally arrived (first one was a years-old munter with some sketchy bodges inside) I barely had a day to listen to it prior to nipping of for a two-week holiday, but today I pulled the four standard cooking-grade Electro Harmonix ECC82s and replaced them with a set of (very) high-testing E82CC from Golden Dragon which I found forgotten in a drawer - not a clue where those came from or if they’re supposed to be good or shit, but no matter, because a great-sounding pre sounds even better now.

I’ve had one of those golden evenings where humble, bog-standard DAB radio sounds just faultless - cool, clear music flowing - resolution to die for - bucketloads of gushing audiophool hyperbole. Lovely.

Shit photograph -

Slightly less shit photo of just the pre before I’d peeled off the protective film on the acrylic top panel -

It sounded bloody good before, can only imagine how good it is now!

Weirdly, I can’t really tell, been too long since the best of the “stuff-I-have-to-sell” has been in-place, but it feels a lot closer to the sound I enjoyed with the Triangles/Beard/Unison Research kit - somehow more ‘live’ sounding, more natural.

Probably sound gash to some, no doubt.

The AudioValve pre is clearly very sensitive to better tubes, so the search is on for ECC82 / 12AU7s to roll - anyone got any long-plate Mullards they want to shift cheaply?

What are you using at the moment Dave? Pics?

Would love to try one at some point.

What do you mean?

Well, it’s a thread about what system one is using at the mo, and so, I naturally wondered - you know - what system are you using at the mo? :ok_hand:

Nice, very nice, but the only thing I recognise is the Coco-San phonostage and (I think) a CEC CDT - what’s the rest of it?

I’m laughing out loud here. Funny.

And this is me trying not to be a complete cunt…
