Hi, hoping for some help from experienced London travellers
Mum and daughter, arriving at Euston on 23rd and staying two nights. They will be leaving to fly back to Italy from Stansted on Wednesday so thinking Liverpool Street area as the express goes from there
Cheap but safe and ideally in an area that is nice to explore or. At least safe to travel into and out of
They will be doing the usual sightseeing so a tube station nearby is handy
Any help much appreciated, esp if you have actually stayed there and it’s safe
I often stay at The Mentone Hotel on Cartwright Gardens , it’s equidistant from Euston and Kings Cross and Russell Square tube station is handy as well. Booking through their website is usually cheapest and there’s a few other hotels on the same road.
Been there after a pint too many and missing last train to Glasgow. Bastard wouldn’t let me hire their internet terminal to book it online for £60 as my phone had just run out of battery and charged me the full rack rate of £120. In at 11pm, left at 6am for the train. That was probably 15 years ago and I still havent forgiven the prick.
Pretty nice hotel now. The area around it is pretty rough at the moment though. Lots of homeless and begging around there. What are your plans when you are up?
Noted re the area around the station. Not dissimilar to bits of Tottenham Court Road/Euston Road I pass through frequently.
We don’t have any firm plans but will do Kelvingrove and area on Saturday, perhaps Sunday out to Loch Lomond or somewhere along the Clyde. And a general nosey around.
Finneston end of argyle st (between the M8 and kelvingrove) is rammed full of nice bars and restaurants depending on what you are looking for.
1pm in kelvingrove art gallery for the organ recital if that’s your bag. It’s at 3pm on Sundays. Jump the low level from central and change at Patrick for balloch (loch lomond) or Helensburgh firth of Clyde, my patch, has a few nice bars and some nice restaurants but is a pretty small town. I get back from Budapest late on sat night but will be around Glasgow on Sunday. If you need anything give me shout.
Ed. Park bar and islay inn both next to kelvingrove are good pubs and should both have some trad live music on Saturday night.
Thanks Tony, some great suggestions. I do like the sound of a big organ so will time visit for that if I can. And you have saved me a couple google searches with how to get to Balloch or along the Firth of Clyde.
I walked through Finneston to The Kelvingrove a couple of weeks ago, looks like a good area as you say. I’m back in Glasgow in a few weeks , may pop up there for a pint.
