Here’s one for you @dom
Listen to Almost Had Me (Desert Recording) by LIGHTS on Qobuz Open Qobuz
Here’s a simple phone freq plot.
Rare to hear / see such sustained around 20Hz.
Not bass playing notes, more like a jet taking off but with the engines only set 30Hz and below.
A real room rumbler if you have speaks that reach that low with power.
Reoccurring throughout the track.
Red plot is peak, yellow levels when I happened to take the screenshot.
I love twin tapped ![]()
I popped in on Steve on my return Journey from Lopwell, last Sunday to listen to these.
These are unusual speakers. They don’t sound quite like anything I have heard before. They aren’t like horns, but then they aren’t totally unlike them, either! They have a really deep soundstage and sound the same whether you are sitting centrally or off axis. The bass is fantastic, and not just the monumentally deep stuff coming from the tapped horns. Steve played me Thunderstruck by ACDC, and my horns don’t come close to producing the thump of those drums. If I’m honest, I’ve always been a teeny bit disappointed by my horns for hard rock, they’re a bit laid back somehow. These seemed to play the other stuff we played well too. They do sound madly different though, and I don’t think I was quite ready for that. I’d been listening to the Snells all weekend, and these are so different, I couldn’t get my head around it. Can I come back again, Steve? I’m very intrigued.
By the way, the legs holding these up have casters in the bottom and there is a runner along the top of the tapped horn so they can be pushed back level with the tv for movie purposes! Very inventive, and typical of Steve who has put an incredible amount of effort into these and the other pair he has made. They are by no means a kit!
I never realised that Steve had taken a saw to the tapped horns to get them up the stairs, either. ![]()
Ritchie you would be most welcome back..
I’m trying a Wiim Ultra streamer and believe it or not, it’s voiced for even more bass and kick😲
I had to reduce 30Hz and 45Hz a bit!
I agree, long single driver midbass horns are too polite.
All very nice for pipe and slippers musical bass stuff but we also want to be grabbed by the lapels and kicked in the chest by ACDC.
They also keep the tapped horn subs in their optimal range. They work best up to about 65Hz. The SH50/60 range do 55Hz flat no problem.
The WiiM Ultra has so far disappointed a bit compared to my very single focused Sonore Ultrarendu.
Lack of easy Linear PSU input is one thing.
It sounds better over WiFi than Lan connection?
Suggesting poor RF rejection?
I guess they didn’t forsee some idiot connecting it up to something as revealing as a Synergy horn with S2s etc ![]()
Don’t get me wrong for the money it’s an amazing but of kit.
Incredibly versatile and the SW / ease of use / Qobuz connect etc etc are to die for.
If only they made a pure sounding bridge only minimalist streamer. They’d slay! No volumes in that though I guess.
I’m going to try my optical Lan Inbetweener to see if they makes any difference.
It provides galvanic isolation.
The Ultrarendu doesn’t need it.
More boxes, maybe try a DDC?
Forgot to mention have Gustard U18.
That does a great job, improving the Ultrarendu a bit.
Reclocking puts the WiiM Ultra way ahead of the WiiM pro (spdif out only so no USB for the U18), but still not enough to touch the Ultrarendu / U18 combo.
You did mention when you were here how tracks like ACDC’s Thunderstruck whilst kicking, don’t sound compressed in the same way.
I found the same thing.
Danley and his PA team know a thing or two about loud and proud🙂
BTW, after the extra bass of the WiiM Ultra streamer, now back on Ultrarendu, I clicked the Crown amp driving the 4 x12" LF drivers up one click!

Yes, the hard rock you played definitely sounded less compressed than on the 5-way here. I’ve heard that a lot because of my son. If he is dj, you are never far away from Thunderstruck or Freebird. ![]()
Freebird Isn’t hard rock, it’s grandad rock. Good tune though.
He sounds fun!
Try Walk This Way - Run DMC / Aerosmith.
I’ve been running the SH50s up in the front drive in prep for using them as wedding sound reinforcement system.
It’s the first time I’ve measured anything in true free space!
Point at the sky is the best I could do..
No way to lift these 3m off the deck on a pole..![]()
Will be some reflections from the ground but 1st pressure wave is from the horn..
REW didn’t seem to mind.
The measuring rig.
Not sure how to post a Video here.
Just says invalid format when I try.
Then I levelled it out but still pointing up a bit and played some music, just laptop Spotify though WaveIO and into Najda (spare one).
Filled the whole front drive with music.
Standing 10-15m away the HF drops off nicely.
I was using the 5w EL84 SET smp on HF.
Again just ticking over!
That’s just one cabinet and it was fast ticking over at loudest ![]()
Two with sub(s) will be loud enough!
These things throw sound.
For some reason (being a twat) I can’t post a link, but have a look at Floating Points Sunflower sound system.
That’s the one. Great story about what he wanted - Paradise Garage ![]()
