It’s from the A is For Ara guys - They were doing MEH over a decade ago,. As a form it does offer an idea about an all in one concept

Synergy MEHs are really NOT meh they are 
It’s a neat form factor indeed.
Get your cheque book out for the Danley HRE1s or make the smaller SM60 style atop FIR’d sub woofs.
I particularly like the subs are not on the front competing.
At around 65Hz and below they don’t harm the single point synergy.
The HRE1s are plug and play though with all amps / DSP built in. Just add front end.
Keith@ammonite had early versions of them. Wonder where they ended up?

What I missed before about the HRE1s is there are only 4 bass taps (or ports).
They are a SM60 a top a bass cab.
The specs for these are
Operating Frequency Range
270 Hz – 15 kHz +/- 3dB
178 Hz – 24 kHz – 10dB
It’s the SM60F (Fuller range ) that have the taps and ports..
Specs
Operating frequency range
66 Hz – 24 kHz +/- 4 dB
52 Hz – 26 kHz – 10dB
These are the ones I have a mind to try making, along similar lines..
This means the bass units on the HRE1s are doing the lifting to 270Hz or so.
Into the Freq range of the single point thing.
Perhaps not noticeable, phase will be controlled by the very powerful FIR..
The Colinear DSP guys have been busy and released a significant firmware and SW interface update.
The main improvements are the Taps are now not allocated 4096 max per channel but a pool that can be divided how you like.
Also “numerous mathematic optimisations to further reduce the noise floor, by processing input channel biquad/FIR filter state to 40-bit precision rather than standard 32-bit.
&
Output full 32-bit PCM audio samples to the DAC.”
Will I hear a difference?
This means I can have few taps on the HF and MF, more on the LF and lots more on the tapped horn subs.
Enough in fact to control the REW measured/corrected against target curve and implement the XO all in FIR and for the output to follow the best case blue line in RePhase.
I took the Tapped horn measurements 10 of at the sofa area so this addresses room modes etc.
Result is very nice sounding sub bass.
I also reworked the HF and MF using full range REW outputs and then the X/Os I wanted in RePhase rather than tight REW target curves. This gave a more dynamic treble.
It’s largely a matter of taste perhaps, but it’s nice to fiddle and have new sounding speakers every now and then, without hardware swapping hassle of passive boxes.

It’s only since getting DSP that I realised that all the adjectives reviewers use for hifi are actually just describing the frequency response. You can achieve some amazing changes just by modifying the room curve.

Yes, the phase linearity capabilities of REW and rePhase also brought out new things I hadn’t heard, the way the mixer had worked on production using phase to avoid phase cancellations - and then we stuff it though 2nd, 4th, 8th order XOs..
They use studio monitors etc to make sure it sounds okay on regular speakers.
They also use headphones of course.
I don’t know much about this..

Looks good, but the drivers are £100 and you need eight of them for a pair. I’d be much happier with an alternative that had two per side.

Im not convinced that ‘Japanman’ would be that impressed by MEH’s.

They do seem lacking in tar / bashing holes through to the garden etc. Also the digital thing leaves an off wasabi flavor.

No heritage, or vanishingly rare ‘golden age’ parts, either… in fact, the entire thing may be flipping Japanman the bird.
I see your point and yes, he’s actually livid ! He just told me he gives it: the ‘fan’ - This is more serious than I thought.

They didn’t invent horns either but that didn’t stop them. Maybe it’s the lack of sex appeal. Digital rarely has much of that, perhaps as Ritchie said they’re missing the usual dose of phallic unobtainium?
Either way, Japan has largely left the idea alone. Danley has distribution there, but MEH hasn’t really caught on with manufacturers or listeners who already know a thing or two about horns.
That may yet change? JBL seem to have adopted a little of it
