You have to remember he’s been hanging around Boston. The Pilgrim Fathers travelled through there on their (eventual) way to Massachusetts. They founded the Plymouth Colony on land which had already had transient visits from Europeans, including Dutch and, I think, British. But when the Mayflower arrived the place was back in the hands of the native Americans, the previous colonists having either given up trying to make it work or died in the attempt.
Always found it heartwarming Plymouth makes so little of the Mayflower - There’s some steps - Not the actual steps you understand and a sign (Both rather overshadowed by a gigantic prawn). It must be wonderfully disheartening for Murcanman to schlep all the way to Devon under the urge to reach the roots of their nation.
To be fair I think that sign does belong in Boston. The band of Puritans, many of whom came from inland Lincs, left England from there in 1607-8 and set up in Leiden in Holland. They were given an unfriendly push at the point of exit, quite a few of them being banged up in Boston’s gaol and relieved of anything of value that they might have been taking with them in the process.
Boston still has the gaol building, complete with cells and a slightly more polite modern sign
As I understand it when they eventually decided Holland was unsatisfactory too (not speaking Dutch they couldn’t get decent jobs and then they noticed their kids were turning too Dutch for their liking) they decided that America would be a better bet. They could behave as they wanted there and there would also be heathens to convert which they seem genuinely to have thought would be A Good Thing. So in the end (1620) they upped sticks again and headed west. The plan was to go in two ships (Mayflower and Speedwell) but Speedwell turned out to be an old banger. They had to pull into a service station (Plymouth) where they sold Speedwell and moved what people and stuff they could into Mayflower. Then off they went.
Technically Plymouth was their final departure point from England but it really wasn’t where they came from or left from (whatever that means) at all.
Why is the Mayfliwer celebrated in the way it is? Hardly the first to try and establish a colony, even that useless twonk Raleigh tried it a couple of times. I rather think the US version of the Mayflower colony history as understood by millions of Yanks is for the fairies.
One of the first two English colonies on the US mainland that lasted. As you say, others had tried, but apart from Jamestown and Plymouth the rest failed. Jamestown was abandoned at one point, but then repopulated.
Despite the colony’s relatively short existence, Plymouth holds a special role in American history. The social and legal systems of the colony became closely tied to their religious beliefs, as well as to English custom.
plus folklore says they invented Thanksgiving, so they get remembered every year.
Plus, well, New England. Where the important people live.
I detest Trump as much as anybody, but I am struggling to think of anything he has done that he didn’t say he would before November 5th.
It’s staggering what a mess he’s creating, and how passive the Yanks appear. Where are all the gun owners who justify arms to protect themselves from their Government?
I think you hit the nail on the head with protect themselves. That sure doesn’t extend to protecting Latino people (mostly criminals, rapists, illegals, madmen etc etc according to The Great Donald).
2024 election results are being questioned… And not just by a blustering orange man insisting he was cheated. It really does seem extremely unlikely that a major candidate would receive zero votes in any given area.
Media Bias Fact Check suggests the LT - Latin Times - is a reliable source of info.
"A lawsuit disputing the results of the 2024 election has moved forward after it was revealed that former Vice President Kamala Harris received no votes a New York state district.
A seminal case calling the results of the presidential race as well as state senate races into question has advanced. The case refers to the results of the election in Rockland County, New York, with Judge Rachel Tanguay of the New York Supreme Court ruling that a full hand recount must occur following the discovery.
The case’s lead plaintiff is SMART Legislation, the action arm of SMART Elections, a non-partisan group that advocates for voting security and voter rights.
“There is clear evidence that the senate results are incorrect, and there are statistical indications that the presidential results are highly unlikely,” Lulu Friesdat, founder and executive director of SMART Legislation, said in a statement."
There have previously been a couple of other claims that Harris didn’t lose the election, but they appear to have been quashed. Certainly nothing further has been heard about them.
