Tales from Uh-merica

Not the well-educated clever people I was working with.

Well who knows what would happen in reality, but their constitution doesn’t allow the federal armed forces to act against the citizenry in the US.

The situation with the National Guard is more complicated - part of their mission is to suppress insurrections, but when it comes to domestic activities I think they are only ever responsible to their individual state Governors, not to the government in Washington DC.

The police are even more locally organised. When Trump’s mob stormed the Capitol the DC police were incapable of stopping them.

They were quite capable of stopping BLM protestors. They didn’t even turn out against the capitol raids did they?

I really don’t give a fuck about why yanks are so in love with guns, the history behind it or the fact it is (vaguely) in the constitution.

Make ownership of anything but shotguns for farmers (or those in remote areas) or single shot bolt action rifles for hunting illegal and then have strict (CR, medical and psych) background checks.

Gun control really is a simple problem to fix if they wanted to.

What about all the guns out and about now, and the anti government ones who won’t hand them over

They will never be able to do anything about all the guns, out there, now.
What ever they try to do for future sales or registration, will have no effect on the existing aresnal they hold.
How do they deal with that?
They can’t.

And there are already more guns than people in the US

They hand them in, is it really that difficult?

The militia nutjobs aren’t the ones shooting schoolkids, it’s parents who keep AR15s etc in the house when their own kids have mental issues that are the problem.

But frankly even a 50% reduction in guns is going to save lives through prevention of accidents and domestic shite etc.

Removing guns from America would take a long time, but it’s all about a gradual, long term reduction. Make them more difficult to get, limit the magazine size, put in storage and training/licensing laws that start to make them expensive to own, and so on. Already most major East and West cities have some controls; expand these gradually.

It’s a process. But it’s not really clear that the political and democratic will is there.

It would take a massive, reeducation process, over generations.
A major fear for them, among many others, is “Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns.”
Even leaving all the law eforcement and military fully armed, will not be enough to satisfy them.

It’s the loons in the middle that are god-madly mad

Stop selling ammo.
The gun nuts blast enough away at ranges that supplies would soon go down
