The AA Bus Stop

There was a poster on the Wam years ago who worked for a multinational car company and given the time differences in Japan, Europe and the US it was theoretically possible for him to work 24 hours a day.
His firm locked down his laptop and company phone so that he could only work certain hours,

Think of all the poor bastards that work for shit firms without a strong union. They get proper fcked.

Every firm could do that but they rely on free labour. They’ve then got the fcking cheek to label working as per your agreed contract as quiet quitting.

I may be mistaken but I think Germany were talking about legislating around stopping access outside of working hours.

True enough, although our Union is in the shit at the moment, 200 reps got sacked during the strikes for alleged misconduct, for instance a rep calling a manager a callous bastard for sacking a guy with a young family for forgetting to do his daily vehicle check.

As a result of appeals pending on those dismissals, we’ve not yet been balloted on the pay & conditions settlement that apparently has been agreed…

In our location the Union have been evicted from their office, a small room which barely had room for 2 desks, and that room is now locked and empty, with nothing planned to go in there.

RM is a pretty toxic place to work these days.

Yes the toxicity is really clear to see. Gap between management and workers needs to close. Must be a horrible place to work at times.

Not for the cars; it’s the bus. And although cameras instead of mirrors seemed like the stuff of fantasy, I drive vehicles so equipped every day…

Fuck the long wheelbase and central driving position though!

Interesting story related to both buses and trains. And a lovely picture of a Leyland Tiger Cub too!

It’s an interesting problem. A 7kw home charger will charge a car overnight, but a bus or coach might be ten times the battery size, and you might need to charge ten of them. A 500kwh battery is reasonable for a coach.

So you need about a megawatt of charging capability. That’s a lot.

If every bus and coach in the UK moved to electric, the ability to use the off-peak cheap electricity would be huge, it could have a real impact on net zero. But that kind of infra is expensive, and it needs to be in the right places (where the buses go to sleep). So all we need is a government willing to invest in infra…

As I see it, the distribution to depots will be the bit which will require work. Actual kit in the depots for DC conversion should be able to be financed through leasing etc. like most coaches run by operators will probably be, so as long as that cost is ok compared to the relative costs of fuel and electricity it should be a fairly simple business decision.

Piece of cake, as long as it’s a Tory donor who is running the installation…
