The shit that does merit its own thread

The real thing looks quite tame:

This is at Blackpool if you fancy a go… (skip to about a minute in)

Its the oldest ride in the park too I think. Despite sharing your misgivings, BPB seems to have a better record than Alton Towers etc. these days.

It’s proper name is great:

When I was a kid the apex of the thrill rides at our annual funfair was this (strictly, these)

The set that came to Boston each May Fair was the ‘other’ set - Harry Lee’s - but they were essentially identical to the ones in the video, only still running in the 1970’s despite their run-down condition. They were scarier than they look (and I’ve been on the Texas Cyclone wooden rollercoaster).

Once you were inside there were literally no restraints other than what you could hang onto. Most years there would be an accident or two where someone would panic and try and get up to leave. There was an on-board operator who could call for the thing to be halted surprisingly quickly, but if it was at full swing there could easily be broken bones.

I think this reports the sale of the Boston ones

Fuck!

SS Richard Montgomery?

It isn’t , although I thought that might have been mentioned; it is focused on Poland, Norway and the US and is largely about the oil still in the tanks and how that is creating major pollution.

I’ve been on that (25 years ago, when it was branded as ‘Playstation’). It’s actually pretty tame. You get about 4g going up and the weightlessness at the top is kind of cool.

I know I do my best to retain a degree of wilful ignorance of everything to do with the monarchy, but I’m pretty sure she’s not called Caroline.

I think as Queen she is entitled to all the names

Does anyone else feel that these Jubilee festivities are just going to be another exercise in WW2 nostalgia complete with Vera Lynn songs?

I was reading a thread on Twitter earlier pointing out that today’s 70 year olds were 18 in 1970 and into some pretty interesting music. 20 year olds in 1942 would be 100 now, a very different time.

Yet oldies now still get Vera played at them. When will it stop?

Exactly this. A lot of jingoistic bloody nonsense.

Nothing so modern, Cliff is providing the “entertainment”
