The TBA Nuclear War

(So far) the only 50 MT explosion:

Putin is going back to that. The RS-28 will do that per missile, albeit in multiple individual warheads.

The Russians also like to use liquid fuel in their multiple warhead missiles. The fuel itself is inherently unstable and in 1980 in Arkansas, a liquid fuelled missile exploded launching the warhead meters away from the facilities main gate. Let’s hope Donald and his special advisors don’t mistake an accidentally exploding Russian missile for an actual launch.

You get a lot more bodies for your buck that way. The trouble with one ginormous bang is that you reach the point where the blast punches out through the top of the atmosphere and making the bomb any bigger just drives the extra energy into space. If you spread it over a large area with a number of smaller devices you can keep all of the blast down near the ground where it hits the things you want to hit.
