Today I have mainly been V5.0 (Part 3)

I do quite like this one.

Sparks agree.

Yesterday we took a nice walk at the Northern end of the moor taking in the villages of Throwleigh, Providence & Gidleigh.

I like the liminal areas at the edge of the higher open moorland, particularly on sunny days when sheltered areas are welcome.

This route headed south towards Throwleigh & soon dipped into quite densely wooded wet areas.

As we came into Throwleigh the footpath led us past this very neat garden sauna.

The village itself was very pretty with a church & quite a few nice thatched cottages.

An old holloway called Deaves Lane led us South towards the village of Wonson.

These old tracks aren’t used by or even accessible to vehicles.

Edge of Wonson

Further along the lane we came to the hamlet of Providence with its very well preserved methodist chapel.

More holloway took us down to Gidleigh, another pretty village with a church & the adjacent remains of a 13C castle (probably more like a fortified manor house really).

remains of the castle.

Angel in the graveyard

Gidleigh has a lovely location & a renowned restaurant called Gidleigh Park set in beautiful surroundings.

A different trail heading back.

nice bridge

Having completed the walk I wanted to go & have a look at a nearby ancient burial chamber called Spinster’s Rock. It’s the only such structure in Devon although there are several in Cornwall.

This would’ve originally been built some 5000 years ago within an earth mound. Apparently it had collapsed in the 19C & was re-erected. It’s still an impressive thing, tall enough to walk inside.

3500BC, amazing.

Fantastic as usual, but, holy shit, a preserved Methodist church in a village called Providence ? The stuff of satanic slasher movies for sure.

That’s the Methodists is it ?

Yes, I was just impressed to even find a place here called Providence. There’s another beautiful, lost little hamlet called Jordan in the middle of the moor which again was an unexpected find. The botherers were in their element here 150-200 years ago

Couple of years ago had to go and pick something up at south molton. Sat nav took me via Okehampton through some really nice villages. Was in a rush so didn’t have time to explore, but must do it again

Think it was this route

Need to explore again. Did so much of Devon and Cornwall when the kids were young

Yes, most of these excursions are onto or around the edge of Dartmoor (occasionally Bodmin) but having travelled up towards N Devon & Exmoor a few times I realise there are whole swathes of countryside I haven’t looked at properly yet.

Years ago we sold one of the very first Voyds to a guy living near South Molton & we delivered it. He showed us around the area including a big old house up a valley that had belonged to his grandmother but also, much earlier, to ‘Hanging’ Judge Jeffreys. I’ve tried to find out where that was but without success so far.

Exmoor certainly needs a closer look but it’s too far for a day trip really.

Yes,needs an out of season long weekend really

This is where we used to stay in the 70s.
Was a very basic place where they had a dozen or more ponies horses for riding.
It was mainly used by youth clubs, and we’d go there 2 or 3 times a year.
It’s a beautiful spot.

No! They probably wouldn’t want to
The room is off limits

My eldest went to a mates house party when he was 15/16 (parents weren’t there) where some idiots turned up and ended up throwing an iMac through a first floor (closed) window which then smashed through the conservatory roof!!

I am sure your party won’t be like that :grinning:

Similar story with a colleague’s step daughter.

The police caught a drunk 12 year old driving his car a week later.

Impressive, did they steal the keys and come back or actually manage to have the car for a week?

He and his wife went away for the weekend. Step-daughter of course had a party. The local neds invited themselves, absolutely trashed the house and stole the car. I think he was surprised to get it back in mostly one piece.

When I was that age (probably 16) we went through a spring and summer of going round to a mate’s for Saturday night parties maybe once a month. His dad was a single parent and worked shifts every so often, so we were unsupervised. Dad was a police officer (uniform) and somewhat intimidating, by reputation at least, so we took care not to damage the place. But we got up to alcohol-fueled things which I’m surprised the neighbours tolerated. Jumping out of the first floor windows seemed like a good idea at the time …

Remember going to a party in the 70s when I was around 15.
Party had just started, and they had one of those pull down plastic type lights. Bloke ran in the room and shouted Pele just before he headed it and it smashed. Party rapidly went downhill from there.
Poor girl whose party it was,was in tears by the end.
