Wasn’t really a tweek of the whole set up which was both excellent and informative.
The cart hadn’t been played since mid December so after a good few hours on the Friday with @sjs I warmed it up again on the Saturday with a couple of sides then played a few albums and adjusted the VTA to see if it had any preference.
I think it improved, but then again, I am not entirely sure I didn’t end up back where it had started:exploding_head:!
The beauty and the downfall of the Triplanar, everything is so easily adjustable the temptation to fiddle is great.
Managed to leave it alone since😁.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a call. Terry @ ANalogue Seduction said they no longer offer a calibration service despite promoting it on their site. Definitive Audio and Acton Gate in Wrexham are good shouts
The arm is a Kuzma 4Point 12", I am not sure if there are any other versions. This is the deck:
Its a great arm, I have heard it on Kuzma Stabi R and XL tables and Grand Prix Audio decks at Definitive and it is more than capable
There are several Kuzma arms called 4Point as that refers to the bearing design
Beautiful. I really want to try a 4point and see what the improvements are over my Stogi Ref 313VTA which tbh I’m more than happy with
I see there are now three versions of the 4Point. I think mine is the 12" EL version which just seems to be called 4Point, with the other versions having 9" &14" EL. Kuzma has revised the bearing cups, which would seem worthwhile over the steel cups on my arm. I will have to look if the cups can be removed from the base.
The 4Point is a fantastic arm, I remember upgrading a mid-level Jelco arm and being staggered at the difference at the time. I also had an Airline for a while but got sick of the fuss and went back to 4Point when I bought the Brinkmann.
I fancy trying a 4Point 9 on my Voyd, the 12 with the VTA tower is great, but I have heard small changes of the vta make a big change on that arm
Fucks sake. I went to play a record for the first time in months to check that my memory of average sound was correct. I was surprised to see that the platter was rotating slowly, a few rpm or so, and that the turntable speed controller was dead. I cycled the power and the platter stopped and the controller came back to life. For a few minutes after all worked normally before the lights on the controller went out again and the platter resumed its slow rotation. I cycled the power several more times with the same fault each time after just a few minutes.
Something is obviously fucked in the power supply or controller and being that it’s microprocessor-controlled, it is probably a job for Brinkmann in Germany. I am not sure I can be bothered with the faff any longer. The POS is about six years old and has spent four of those in a box, six months sounding good and the last 18 sounding like shit.
Perhaps I should simplify, bin the Brinkmann, and get a Crosley Cruiser. I have had my fair share of failures over the years - good audio is too finicky.
Maybe a change of turntable is in order without any expectation of it producing the very best sound. Just relax and accept it will play records and don’t worry about the sound.
I tried to play a record and when I lifted the tone arm I got a dreadful noise from the speakers. It’s the same when I touched the SUT. I have checked all the connections and earths but it’s still there. What’s happening?
Check the earth wires.
I have an earth wire from the Turntable to the SUT and from the mm phono stage to the preamp.
Maybe clean the contacts.
If your earths are ok, it may be that your arm needs to be rewired.
You could be right. I tried to fit a new tonearm cable and it got stuck because it was to big and I had a hard time getting it out.
There’s Adventures in Hi-Fi in Chester as well.
It would seem that Symmetry Systems are the UK dealer (or perhaps distributor) of Brinkmann. Has anyone dealt with them? They are based in St Albans so when I have reason to be that far south I might drop the POS off for repair. Perhaps they will do a proper setup for me too.
Yes, I know Nigel. Top guy. I am sure he will sort things out for you.
He has been around, in this business a long time, a very nice man, as well.
That’s encouraging to hear, thanks Cat. I will contact them on Monday and see what they reckon. It is such a distinct set of fault symptoms I hope they have come across it before.
