Good lord, stunning picture!
They’re good at that…
Battered and beaten by the weather after 3 hrs in the field, at least I managed to find this Long-eared Owl before I threw the towel in.
Every year I check thousands of Golden Plovers trying to find an American Golden Plover. It can be disheartening at times, especially when flocks of 500 or more gather in the Autumn and they all turn out to be European birds.
Finally it paid off when I found this pristine juvenile AGP at Funzie this afternoon.
Very few migrants on show today, just a couple of Chiffs and this Yellow-browed Warbler which has been at Leagarth for nearly a week now.
Staying in Edale this weekend. Had a small window for birding, heard a great deal, saw a little and shot not much at all. Autofocus didn’t seem to be behaving, almost certainly pilot error and I need to dig into the settings to see what’s occurring.
Anyway, got me a Dunnock for the first time
The backside of a Jay
A very blurry Nuthatch
Found this Bluethroat at Funzie this afternoon, such a skulker, only saw it out in the open once in well over an hour.
A much more drab bird that I only saw at great distance, hence the massively cropped record shot.
It’s a Dunlin, no doubt, but in my opinion it’s the Greenland sub-species - arctica - quite different to our breeding birds (sub species schinzii) which have long departed south.
Another clear out last night (clear skies) so it was hard work today. One Yellow-browed Warbler and this Willow Warbler (very likely acredula ssp - breed in the far north)
and a single Goldcrest in the plantation
All in all, October has been a pretty good month for finding scarce/rare birds and there’s still a week of it left.
Today I found a Pec Sand (Pectoral Sandpiper) a wader that breeds in the far North, on the edges of the Arctic Circle.
It’s a scarce migrant in Britain and the first one I’ve seen in Fetlar.
It was always distant ~100m at best so the pics are very heavily cropped. Personally, I prefer the flight shots.
A much larger Golden Plover in the background
A good birthday bird!
Great find!
