Just in case one of you has something nice that I can plug my Dreamcast/ Saturn/ PS1 etc into using RGB/ VGA etc.
I would have suggested browsing your local charity shops but the one I work for wouldnāt even accept a CRT TV as a donation.
May need to change that, they are starting to come back into view for the same reasons.
Iāve got a HP L1706 (17") you can have. Will need a VGA cable and power lead (kettle type) if I canāt find one.
Iām away today for a week then we could meet up.
Hardly a standard CRT TV
Charity policy wonāt change, we get offered far more than we can sell and get hit with disposal costs. CRT TVs are not viable even if there is a tiny niche market.
Same problem at our shop. We sometimes sell one for a fiver after PAT and functional testing.
Just buy an adaptor and plug into the HDMI on your TV or monitor.
Stupid boy, whereās the faff in that
Purists like the āanalogueā effect of a CRT. It helps hide the low resolution of older consoles and some lower frame rates. Itās a bit like vinyl.
Thereās even a whole thing on various console emulators where various types of CRT are emulated as well. Itās all a bit mad but if you want that purist retro rgung you need a CRT
Waaay back when I first had a Dreamcast I had it plugged into a Sun Microsystems CRT monitor via VGA so the DC could output at 480P and it looked
The Sun monitor was a massive fricking beast acquired from a Catia/ CAD station and weighed an absolute ton. Hel made me get rid of it and I dread to think how much that particular unit would fetch now.
Incredible how heavy CRTs are, given a vacuum weighs nothing.
In my first flat I decided I wanted a Loewe Aconda 32 inch flatscreen. Cost me almost as much as the deposit on the flat and weighed about the same. Picture used to open and close like a stage curtain and the sound was phenomenal. Fcking loved that TV.
We had the same model. Absolute beast and yes, very expensive.
We ended up donating it to the in-laws. Their Polish neighbour kept it on life support for about a further decade.
Just like vacuum tube amps.
I had a couple of the 20ā Sun CRTs (made by Sony) which I grabbed when work were getting rid of them (used with PCs via a 13W3->VGA adapter). They cost thousands and were state of the art a few years prior. I think I sold them both for Ā£20 back in about 2008.
Speaking of retro computing, I hanker after a SPARCstation 10 from back in the when I had one as my work computer. Unbelievable build quality. No idea what I do with it, though, except stroke it occasionally.
In a parallel dimension where Iām a billionaire of leisure I have a room in my custom modernist mansion where all the seating is made out of old Cray supercomputers.
Now sorted for a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro monitor, just gotta pick it up.
