Cheers Mike - I have another Tyskie and a couple of others chilling in the mini bar. The Tyskie does taste better than at home but then I expect that is just expectation bias.
The darker the malt the toastier (read burnt) it gets. Darker beer, if blended using a variety of dark malts, tends to hide the worst of the burnt flavours and they become more in line with “smokey”.
It is a delicate balance though. Sadly these days, proper brewing has been lost to novelty. Why else would you need to add so many adjuncts ? Oh, apart from covering up faults, I mean
Normally the Wigan Brewhouse stuff is pretty decent. They do tend to experiment a bit, with variable results. They do one called Gin Pit, flavoured with juniper, which is really nice but gives me a raging hangover.

Just what I hate, if you can’t get the flavours you want without adding extraneous shit, then it’s a novelty.
I have always been a traditionalist. If it doesn’t fit within the Reinhertzgebot (rushes off to check spelling), it shouldn’t be used in brewing. The only exception is a brew which has a 200 year history. There’s not many of them about which use other flavourings. Belgians being the exceptions.
I agree, but even those rules dont guarantee a good tasty brew - inappropriate hops with a stupidly dark malt can be a disaster.
These days sensible flavouring can enhance. You will of course end up with some crazy combos.
The Peach Melba IPA I had yesterday was deliciously refreshing, light fruitless with delicate sweetness and a really good hit of bitterness. A brilliant beer for Thornbridge.
Despite the fact that I am denied the joys of the true drop these days I have no sympathy for that sort of shit. The entire brewery staff should be birched for thinking that would be a good idea and the Chief Brewer should be boiled in any remaining Peach Melba IPA before being launched over Runcorn with a Trebuchet. It’s bad enough that we have to put up with fucking Brexit without some cunt foisting fucking Peach fucking Melba fucking IPA on us.
If it is for the Dean/HoS job, you might as well get on the lash immediately. The committee will have largely made its mind up already. You will look back fondly on the hangover when the real headaches and nausea inducing news arrives to your door on a weekly basis.
Particularly as most of the panel will be more than half cut !
