What I'm watching (Part 1)

I would think that’s unlikely. Although they have pacemakers in competitive events, they start together and would have to run the whole, or at least 90%, of the race to be effective. Some of the pacemakers here only ran certain sections of the route, joining in at various stages.

I don’t really have a problem with the pacemakers & wouldn’t have a problem if he was simply following a pace setting vehicle. If you’re attempting something at the very limit of human capability it’s unsurprising that you can’t get a group of people to accompany you all the way through the attempt. It’s demonstrating that the thing can be done that matters.

It’s like saying that the achievement of the ‘free- solo’ guy who climbed El Capitan without ropes or fellow un-roped climbers alongside him is somehow invalid.

I don’t have a problem with pacemakers for this kind of feat either, just pointing out that would be highly unlikely to happen in a competitive race.

Well not officially at least, but it does happen at the big meets where someone in the team is going for it and a compatriot is willing to support them by effectively throwing their own chances.

I’m not saying it doesn’t happen in big races, I know it does, I’ve seen it many times. What I mean is I doubt very much that anyone else has the ability to set the pace for a sub 2 hour marathon for 90-95% of the race.

Yeah the pace is extraordinary, 4 and a half minute per mile x26 :scream:. You basically need 2-3 pacemakers who are capable of maintaining that pace over the relatively short distance of 8 or so miles…

When you’re pottering around like I am at 9 minute miles the fact that these guys are going twice as fast and four times the distance really puts it into perspective.
