I genuinely don’t remember much explanation/exposition in the original book. Maybe I need to re-read it. Over the six novels it fills a lot in though.
It did have a handy glossary though.

It was the shields that allowed things to travel through them slowly but stopped projectiles. They did try to make lasers but they had a habit of killing the person firing them and those around them.
There was a bit of a tendency for that to be true with laser weapons developed in reality too …
The book doesn’t really explain CHOAM, the whole business side, at all. They’re is a glossary, which also is fairly light tbh. The bene gesserit only really come into their own much later, in the books that I think he wrote with his son; they’re explained much more there.
I’m currently on the third book, having decided to reread for the first time - I think I read them when about 13. They’re much better than I remembered! I now really like the way that it doesn’t over explain, which I think annoyed the teenage me.
Waiting for the pool final. 9 o/c bbc iplayer.
I love playing pool.
I love that name Combine Honnette Ober Advancer Mercantile
I’ve just finished the six books and it’s a superb read. I was defo too young to appreciate them first time round - the subtlety was lost on my feeble young mind.
Books 5 & 6 are almost as good as book 1 and I don’t say that lightly as it’s my favourite book.
It’s been literally decades since I’ve read the books. And I struggled through book 3 then gave up.
I don’t claim to be more grown up since 1985, but I might have to give them another go.
Worth a go Rob - book four is hard going but it sets up the remaining two and helps develops the story along a quite different path to the first book.
I can send you books 2-6 if you want to read them again Rob ?
My memory is wrong. I have had a think about it.
I never read the third book.
It didn’t exist when I read the first two, (around 1973). People told me book 3 was rubbish and just cashing in on the first two so I didn’t bother
I think I’ve got 1-3 at mum’s house, and I’m going there tomorrow to do her shopping, if they’re still there I’ll take your offer for 4-6?
Obvs there’s a strong possibility that she’s binned the whole lot, so in that case I’ll have the lot! I’ll let you know later tomorrow if that’s ok?
No worries mate - maybe pass them on to Kev if he fancies giving them another try
I think the thing I maybe didn’t quite grasp first time round was just how much time elapses between book two and every subsequent book.
Don’t worry, the postage will be as much as the book.
I will get it on my kindle, but have just started a quite long book so it will be a couple of weeks I expect
I found books 1-3 at my mums, on the bookshelf in my old bedroom along with some Commando books and copies of An Inspector Calls, A Kestrel For A Knave and Lord of The Flies that I forgot to give back to school…
So I’ll take you up on your offer of books 4-6 please Al.
I’ll stick them in the post this week Rob
Just finished afterlife
I’ve been watching Another Life on Netflix. Very good sci-fi, and as a bonus Katee Sackhoff gets her kit off.
