Who's following the Tom Evans debacle?

This bit annoyed me the most. MiM did a full set of measurements after the repair, showing the signal exactly as expected. If it measures OK, i don’t see what other damage TE could possibly be talking about that would cause further failure down the road. Sound like a lot of bravado and horse shit to me.

Also why on earth would MiM post the unit to TE? I think TE is telling porkies about the origin of the unit and who sent what to whom. Again, possibly because the real answer wouldn’t make him look too good.

Yes, as TE says, there are two sides to every story, I’m just not sure his side is true

I am not following the Tom Evans debacle

No one expects the Tom Evan’s debacle

For £25,000, I’d expect my phono stage and power supply to be delivered to me in a custom made flight case that would protect it properly from the vagaries of couriers especially given the acrylic case and the use of fragile plastic stand offs throughout the build.

@sjs does that for phono stages at one fifth of the price

I expect it was, at least proper packing and double boxed.
TE in his reply says they have never had a new item damaged in transit
How the owner posted it back to TE is another matter altogether.

I find it quite unbelievable that people buy expensive hifi and don’t keep the boxes.
Hence the number of ‘collection only’ sales ads you see,

I have loads of boxes in the loft.

Many don’t.
Your comment about manufacturer’s boxing is irrelevant, nothing in the story says that TE don’t properly package their kit

Well, all I am saying is, much to Gwen’s chagrin, I keep all of the boxes for my kit, and some manufacturers go the extra mile with packaging.
I have had dealings with Tom about a Vibe and Pulse PSU. Communications were ok. Packaging was adequate.

The Streisand Effect is up and running!

Original video back up on Mend It Mark channel now which should defuse most of the situation

?

Can’t see it unless its been taken down again? I know a few wildcats have posted it but presume they’ve been removed.

I just typed “mend it mark” into YouTube and it suggested “mend it mark tom evans”.

What an own goal :man_facepalming:

Sorry, it has been upload by someone else, but there is no ‘covering’ blurb so I thought it was on the original channel.

i mean the fact the channel name is different and the video description says

“I have re-uploaded this video as a show of support for the Mend It Mark channel and for the right to repair. A link to Mark’s channel is above my description. Just to reiterate I am hosting Mark’s video. All credits to the video belong to Mark.”

I’m not sure where the confusion comes from

Good for you

I looked him up and saw the address was local to me. It’s a building that houses multiple business include a dance studio, a Tae Kwon Do dojo and a music shop/rehearsal rooms. I know this because I used to go there regularly to rehearse with bands I was in.

I’m sure he also put an incorrect (ie fake) CE mark on the device and I’m sure that’s probably illegal under UK law or something (allegedly)

CE is self-certified, though most businesses process their equipment through registered test houses. TE may do his own testing and certification - he’s perfectly within his rights to do so - or he may simply assert that he believes his equipment is safe and leave it in the lap of the gods… That is foolish in the extreme, since he leaves himself wide open to legal action if anyone is ever hurt, but it is entirely legal. It’s a ludicrous system.

Further confusion arises because China invented the so-called ‘China Export’ mark, which is visually almost identical aside from different spacing. This has no validity from a safety certification POV.

I’m a little out of date as to requirements now, but a decade ago I used to CE self-certify my own former small range of products because I couldn’t afford to do otherwise. I took it very seriously, and documented every last component used and their certifications (where applicable), as well as all of the testing procedures at both prototype and production stages. This I repeated annually.
Even though that business failed, I still have thick files of the paper copies of all of this documentation, just in case any incident ever arises.
