Wildlife (non-avian)

Fuck getting out of the jam jar to break up.a fight between wild boar!

Dangerous little puggies! :skull_and_crossbones::skull_and_crossbones::skull_and_crossbones:

I gather there’s an effective means of calming them.

Quiet Piggy.

If it was me I would have grabbed his finger and put him on the floor…then ‘enjoyed’ life in prison.

Maybe it was dropped there by a swallow

Nice. Eyed ladybird. Not that uncommon in the right places, but the right places are fast disappearing - predominantly old established native pine woodland… Assuming it’s still alive, it needs to overwinter in soil/leaf litter that won’t dry right out, and not stay waterlogged either, ideally in pinewoods.

Saw this poor little guy the other day .. about to cross the busy A4 near me …looks like he’s already been in a scrap with something…hence the detached tail… I scooped him up and put him in the bushes near a stream …

Sloworm …Not a worm or snake. . he’s really a lizard (legless) …

Very unusual to see one of those out at this time of year. Being cold-blooded, they don’t usually move much once the weather gets cold. We have loads of them in our garden here. Find them in the house occasionally as well!

I’m guessing the mild temps we’ve been having is messing with the critters …I think the hedgehogs keep waking up and eating…not really hibernating as they should …

My what big teeth you have, Grandma

They do need some pretty strong teeth, as their diet includes surprisingly large amounts of hard-shelled crustacea, echinoderms and molluscs, especially in marine habitats. Great generalists all-told - there’s not much that isn’t on the menu for 'em.

Visiting Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey today. Walked within 20 metres of this fellow. He was very docile, waiting to drop those impressive antlers before regrowing ready for October festivities!
Very impressive.

If you asked AI to create an image of someone who beat a sheep to death and then stuffed it with explosives . . .

I don’t go out specifically looking for Otters but often see them at a few regular locations. Today I watched this individual searching for food, I think it’s an adult female, based on size alone.

After catching and quickly eating a fish it caught a small octopus and devoured it in seconds.

I kept watching as it dived frequently and it finally hit the jackpot. A very decent sized octopus which put up a fight but there was only going to be one winner.

Too large to eat in the water, it brought it ashore (out of my view) and I could hear the excited squeaks of the kits it was obviously feeding.

Not wanting to disturb them, I didn’t try to get any closer and left them to enjoy their quarry.
