As soon as I saw this headline, I just knew Tim Flannery would be involved. His book - “Throwim Way Leg” - is a wonderful account of a remarkable mammalogist in a country that surely has many new species, yet to be described.

Despite the obvious dangers involved, it’s one of the few places I would love to visit again.

I’ve seen plenty of hornet workers, but not a queen before - she was so fucking big I had to do an ID check before deciding what to do, as I wasn’t sure if she was an invasive.

Happily not, and she was remarkably unaggressive despite her formidable appearance.

And no, not a queen wasp - we get loads of those every year - big-enough (especially if you step on one in bare feet…) but less than half this size.

She shot-off like a bullet once released outside in the warm sunshine.
