Yes, which is what I described above as the doorbell is needed someway away from the front of the house, next to the iron gate.

Tape a mobile number to the gate.
Get a payg sim and old mobile.
Tape it to the wall in the hall and have a pretend intercom?

Or try two empty bean cans and some tight string?

I think the issue is he doesn’t want them coming to the door as would rather have them stay at the gate until he checks them over?
