A horn that’ll play down to 5-600 Hz is still going to be quite large & long. Realistically you’re going to be crossing higher at perhaps 800-1000 Hz & then you’ll be wondering how agreeable your bass driver is going to stay playing that high.
Yeah that’s Hifi and rooms. Almost everything is a compromise. The plan is onken cabinets and Altec 416 bass drivers.
The reason I’m dicking about with various drivers in Lowther Acousta cabinets is that to me they’re about as large a speaker as people generally would wear before they start getting strange looks from most partners, friends or acquaintances and also taking into account UK living room sizes. But, and this is the key, they can go low enough, effortlessly enough filling the space with that easy quality in a way reflex or sealed boxes can’t/don’t. Yes you can assemble or acquire larger, multi way horn systems but you are then at risk of appearing strange ![]()
Hi, I’m Ritchie, I’m 6 weeks horn free. My horn habit started with Onken cabs and ended up with a houseful of mad junk that still didn’tdo quite what I wanted it to. I had loads of fun, I can’t deny that but it is quite nice to press 2 buttons and just lusten to music.
I may relapse… ![]()
So, you’re an audiophile?

Analogue gods - A pox on this man.
You may say that I’m a streamer, but I’m not the only one…
If you’ve joined a Hifi forum I’d say you’re already on the edge of people thinking you’re strange.

I was going to say you’re a seamer
. And as for pressing buttons …
The cricket career ended pretty much as the horn period began… ![]()
And when your enablers start calling you an audiophile, that’s when you know you are truly fecked. ![]()
I’m open to being enabled
He should have started
“Hi, I’m Ritchie, I’m a audiofoolaholic”
(Clue the Inspector Clouseau Commissioner’s eye-twitching madness)
Is 50cm wide, too wide?
Wait. What about the bass, man? It’s 7 feet long! ![]()
