Were they the “Landfill Olympians”?
Yes, I do miss that system. It was well suited to my room. But obviously my ambitions got the better of me. My plan was always for a slightly bigger version of that, basically what Simon made with the 12As. But I’ve now realised that’s too big for the room, really. Moving is not really in the cards, so I need to make it work here. I’ve been a bit stalked and post hifi, I really should get on and do something. I do have a plan with some smaller mid horns, between the 22A and 12A in size. WE “London” horn sized, I guess.
Nice. Life’s too short!
I think that the open baffle bass system that you had going was great for your room. Why not get that going with some random garage finds on top and see where things take you?
Why would I do that? The bass was the weak point. Open baffle is not always the answer, you know.
Yes, in that space I don’t think it could get much better. Always sounded lovely to my ears.
Most bass system would be the weak link in a system that had those drivers.
I was just thinking about how to get something running really, that actually fitted in the room!
Chimney horn bass?
How small a room could you fit a reasonable DIY horn system?
Asking for a friend…(fridges might be too big for my new room, old place was open plan)
You can fit one in any sized room, really, just need to design it appropriately.
The router is ready
My 3 way ones work pretty well in a 5m x5m room.
Best I heard them in was a 7m x 5m approx size room
Why would OB fit any better? They don’t really take up any less space than the corner horn design I was planning as they need space at the back.
Something like this:
What I actually wanted:
And yes, it sounds fucking stupendous.
Please do not fall prey to the two juggernauts of the Japanese swearing world.
‘Practical and compromise’.
Well they look great, let’s make them.
CD throats 3D printed, the rest wood?
Lol, I’ve seen your woodwork.
Harsh but fair
I’m the only one that knows that the real reason you had to sell the YLs is that you made a measuring error so the mid horns were not quite symmetrical. That 1cm diff was doing your OCD in
How tall is the bass horn and has it just got 2 angles or just simplified for the sake of the drawing?
2m and no, that’s it. You could make it a continuous curve, but that would make construction much harder for negligible performance benefit. Drivers are Eminence Kappa (or Vitavox AK151 with a very slightly different flare). They will get to about 35Hz in room.
They’re designed as eighth space horns, so need to go tight into corners. The mouth of the bass horn is 70x70cm and the mid horn is 75x 75cm.
