WTD: Raytheon 5687 tubes

Looking for a pair of Raytheons, especially the gold plate variety, to try in the BTJ.

Ideally to buy but a short loan would also be helpful to evaluate potential.

I preferred the early Tung Sol black plate 5687 to the Raytheons.

Might have some 5687 in the stash but not sure what maker though.

Got these you can borrow.
Don’t want to sell though

What did you end up using Kev?

I have used the phono with the valves you supplied.
I have only ever tube rolled 5687 in the M7 and that has been painful enough.
Ended up with GE 5687 5star in the M7

So far this year I have bought tested/matched NOS Raytheon (4) and NOS Tung Sol (4) and half of each went back for microphonics. But both sound really nice in the Modwright.

Now you have made me order a quad of ebay to try!!

How are you getting on with Valve Nut- Nut over in Merca?

In the end I got some from Langrex as some stock came in and also got a pair from PQ at Audio Note as when I contacted AN they said they couldn’t sell me any but PQ would from his stash.

Easier solution than using Nut-Nut but less entertaining for all on here I’m afraid.

I wonder if he is related to Princess Nut-Nut…

The curse of the 5687 is finding quiet ones,
It is not brand specific either

yup, I have a box full of 5687 which are “not quiet enough for a linestage”, mainly due to various pop and ping noises during warm up

And in a phono stage that’s multiplied :frowning:

At least the 5687 is on the output in this design and I’ve found the E810F to be pretty good (albeit you need to match them in terms of Gm or you get a channel imbalance as I use them as a transconductance amp.

Sadly there’s no modern production substitute for the 5687 so we’re left with a dwindling supply of NOS. :frowning:

There are other types that can sometimes substitute like E182CC or 7044. No guarantees, though. I think @PapaLazarou might have some experience with the E182CC that I gave him a few years back to try in the M7.

Yes, think I still have the Mullards

How did you find them in the M7? Think you ended up preferring the TS or Raytheon?

I recall trying them in my Kit 1 and I recall that I wasn’t so keen on them.

Was a long time ago, but Tungsol were preferred.
Didn’t have Raytheons back then. Rate them very highly.

I tend to prefer the 7044 to either 5687 or E182CC, it sits somewhere between the two in terms of sound when used in the same circuit. I have a DAC with GE 7044 which is quiet enough.

ITT: Bro acquires the most balls- out phono amp ever built, has it a day, and wants to start tube rolling. :raising_hands:
