Ye olde worlde hi fi corner shoppe

My pair came from a charity shop opposite what was a high end audio store.

Their faces as they watched us carry out a pair of 1973 Monitor Gold Ten 3LZ was a picture!

The 15” silver GRF in the slide show came from a charity shop. The guy bought it to make a fish tank out of it!!! Thankfully this brain fart floundered and his wife rang to get it out of her garage.

CliveG used to have GRF with Reds and then swapped them out for some 15" silvers.

Never really been a fan of Tannoy but those sounded really good with a Shindo pre and Radford STA100 amp.

Yes! Clive was an interesting and lovely guy. He’d had a lot of high end kit but went full circle back to vintage front & back.

A fair few have / do.

Hoping to go back to a garrard at some point. Bloody love the smell of them.

Yes, for a variety of reasons it seems. It’s common for people to have a highend modern TT for stereo and a 301 for Mono for example.

That’s something I’d love to do.

I use a fairly basic DJ turntable for mono duties which sounds decent enough but I think that’s as much to do with the quality of the mono recordings. Maybe one day. :crossed_fingers:

Michell Iso HR/Argo HR/Alecto. I was seriously horny for these in the early 90s

Thumbing through an old edition of Audiophile brought them to mind.

Always reminded me of these

They still fetch decent money in good nick, so you’re clearly not alone - never actually heard a set, but would certainly like to :+1:

I recall them being quite dark sounding, but that meant they didnt spit in the treble like a lot of sand based amps of the day
See phrases like smooth and rich in reviews…

Think they were designed by Trichord for Michell, Tom Evans certainly designed the phono and preamp.

A backbreaking lump of 1990s madness - an Audio Research Reference 600 monobloc being serviced at its home base:

Thirty-six choobs in total, and drawing 1kW at idle!

Needs ten feet just to support the weight!

They’re 31 inches deep front-to-back including the handles and nearly 80kg each.

Claimed to output up to 600 Watts, it’s hard to imagine the parameters where that would actually be possible, nonetheless they’ve no doubt got some decent real-world grunt, if inefficient speakers are your thing.

£25,0000 30 years ago. Since replaced by the nearly-as-mad Ref.750 monos at a mere £90,000… :face_with_spiral_eyes:

They may well sound pretty decent, but I’m actively glad I don’t own them!

That beard amp you had many years ago had a lot of 84s? Iirc

Way back in the distant past I was offered a pair for about £7k iirc. I dragged my big Thiel speakers over to have a demo - and yes they did light those up and was very tempted until sanity prevailed.

Different but not necessarily better than the Krell I had at the time.
