2017 Formula 1 - The next generation

Looking forward to orange Mclarens (hopefully).

Great idea, opens the door to sponsorship opportunities:-

That would win, bigly.

Once again, stands full of people for Trump.

Won’t be allowed by FIA. No political statements or gestures.

Don’t think that will stop the local fans from making their feelings obvious.

They might, but the local promoter can/will be fined, or worse, race suspensions with no refund of fees.

The best looking McLaren (purely the colour) that I remember is this one:

1998 orange McLaren test car

It isn’t as orange as I remember, so either my memory is fading or the camera etc has not transferred the colour that well (probably a combination of the two).

Did they have issues with sponsorship or something that year? Unusual to see the drivers name given such dominance, even on a test car.

Not that I can remember.

The reason for running the orange car was explained at the time but I cannot remember why.

Wasn’t that about the time they made a second production run of the F1 road car, all of which were painted a similar colour of orange?

Ah yes, looks like it might have stemmed in part from the F1 LM, most of which were done in Papaya Orange, as that had been Bruce McLaren’s racing colour:

Well spotted.

The Cigarette advertising ban had been imposed on some markets. They were sponsored by West which had silver as their corporate colours. However, where the ban was in place, they had to use Mika and/or David in the style of the West logo.

The orange colour was used as a tribute to Bruce McLaren’s original colour scheme due to some anniversary or other. It’s one of the few times that Ron acknowledged that there was a McLaren before he took over.
