In other news, Sauber becomes Audi from 2026.

I wonder if Porsche, still keen on entering F1, will find a way in?

I could never really understand why VAG would want two teams unless one was to be the ‘understudy’, as per Red Bull / Alpha Tauri &c.

Ummmm…

Are they doing this on purpose?

I mean, it’s the right decision, but this is pure pantomime at this point…

Yeesh…

So if I understand this correctly

Cock-up 1 - not showing Alonso the black and orange flag when his car was clearly damaged
Cock-up 2 - giving Haas the wrong information on when their objection needed to be in
Cock-up 3 - allowing the Haas objection and giving Alonso the penalty even though the objection was outside the time regulation
Cock-up 4 - Then reinstating Alonso - even though the right decision - thus making themselves even more of a laughing stock.

Haas’s objection shouldn’t even have been an issue if they hadn’t made Cock-up 1.

Did I miss anything?

Yup. Alpine sought clarification during the race

But it’s only a US$2.14 billion sport. We can’t expect them to have the right kind of rules, procedures and personal to deal with something as complex as a damaged mirror.

I had missed that. It makes it much worse because the clarification was clearly wrong - the car should have been pulled in as others with much less dangerous damage had been. I can certainly understand why Haas feel agrieved. Having issued the clarification then the objection shouldn’t have been allowed.

Am I getting closer?

Token fine and 10% wind tunnel reduction for RBR.

FFS a better penalty would be to reduce their cap by $7 million. That fine is fuck all to them

Their financial punishment is not a reduction in their permitted spend next year, when the budget cap is $135m.

All that does is tell teams they can overspend to their hearts content and only pay a fine.

The whole thing became bollocks as soon as we found out RB were negotiating their punishment. I suppose at least it’s a progression from Ferrari’s oil burning scandal from a few years ago, when everything was kept secret. :poop::poop::poop:

Kinda has the same whiff about it though.

Very predictable, too - the alterative would be the FIA admitting to all of their mistakes…

Most likely the RB marketing budget will just pay the fine and it is business as usual for RBR.

The 10% wind tunnel time reduction is not the difference between the RBR and any other car on the grid this season. I.e. if they had had 10% less time in the wind tunnel for this year’s car, then they would still most likely have won both championships, albeit later in the season.

So I (and others who work in F1) am not seeing this as punishment or deterrent really, just a lot of hot air.

It appears the other team heads are meeting….

The other teans were vocal in calling for a significant penalty.
I’d expected little more than a slap on the wrist (which would have been a pathetic excuse for a penalty) but this isn’t even that.

Absolutely useless.

They’ve totally blown it :disappointed:

I wouldn’t have the faintest idea what 10% wind tunnel time equates to in lap time, but the fact that it’s 10% wind-tunnel time decrease with no subsequent offset in spend just means they’ll spend that money elsewhere

Just bonkers
