Anyone know why Merc and Ferrari didn’t switch Russel and Leclerc respectively to Soft tyres at some point in the ~40th-50th laps? By then, midfield drivers as unlikely as Ricciardo were tearing through the pack on Softs, Merc had hit the buffers on Hards, and both drivers had more than sufficient gaps behind them to make the switch without losing places.
Yet Ferrari never did, and Russel was left out until the last possible moment before getting softs for fastest-lap bid.
In Ferrari’s case I do not think that they could gain anything (as in they were too far back) but with every pitstop there is a risk of it going wrong and so could have lost points in their battle for second.
I thought that they should have put RUS on a 2 stop strategy with 2 goes flat out on the soft tyres (long before RIC showed that they were the tyre to be on).
Race Strategy lesson 101: use soft tyres in the latter stages of the race as then the track has gripped up and the fuel load is reduced and you will get better performance for longer.
I understand that VER used, used softs at the start to try and help him remain in the lead. Whereas I think that the RBR car in his hands was so quick that any reasonable strategy would have seen him win. And even on the slightly less optimum strategy that they used, he still won by a very comfortable 15 seconds, i.e. he was cruising.
