Southgate’s stance isn’t helping him, is it? He can’t pick a player for England who lost form for his club and is out of favour/isn’t playing because of it. That is going to invite mockery, surely he can see that?
The truth of it (as I see it), is that Maguire had a chance to move in the summer but chose to sit on his fat contract instead, and in any normal circumstances that would mean he had thrown his England shirt away.
Hopefully Southgate will wake up before next summer…
Nah, I suspect he’ll dull his way into the finals without a clue how to compete against the better teams, especially when a bit of creativity is required, and then lose against the first decent team England play.
At which point the pundits, ex players and media cheering him to date on will do a 180 and lay into his negative tactics, lack of flexibility and continuously picking his favourites regardless of form.
