Funnily enough, we were talking about perogis the other night and fancied some (done properly).
However, we only had dumplings so decided on Laab to accompany.
My first visit to Poland in 2006 saw me try three home cooked meals on the first day.
Bigos; Pierogi and Pierogi with strawberry and cream filling.
Mouth watering as I type! Another favourite is Flaki* ![]()

*I’m sure I spelled that wrong. It is a stew with slow cooked beef; veand sheeps stomach.
Edited got recipe wrong:
Very versatile, Stu! Goes really nicely with chips, as well as dumplings or boiled tatties. For the pearl barley, rinse first & 500ml of water to 100g dry weight of p.b. Bring to boil & hold at moderate boil fer 10mins with lid off pan, then simmer on low simmer for 20mins with lid on. At this stage most of the liquid should be absorbed & it’s ready to combine with the rest of the ingredients. Don’t drain or rinse at this point or you may diminish the thickening magic.
P.B. is often under utilised & overlooked & works wonderfully in comfort food casseroles.
Theakstons OP or McEwans Champion are good alternatives for Old Tom.
Happy birthday, innit @Jim ![]()

Happy belated birthday Jim ![]()
Hope you were allowed a glass of something with it, and had a good birthday!
Yes, not been drinking much at all lately (because jabs) but Ann made me a nice G&T ![]()
In Yokoso (Japanese restaurant in Gants Hill) with fols.
Spider rolls (soft shell crab), salmon teriyaki rolls, chicken katsu, and Chef’s special yakisoba. All really good ![]()
We tried to order the fresh fish, but they said no ![]()
It’s your birthday, should have dived in with your chopstick
Spider Roll is one of my fav comfort foods
Lack of sushi or sashimi is disturbing though
There was plenty on the menu…..

Shakshuka, with feta, Greek yoghurt and flatbread. The Greek yoghurt has olive oil, smoked paprika, hot honey on it. Fresh parsley over everything.
Made a double batch of the sauce so easy lunch tomorrow as well!
